Ebo Mili’s hunger strike enters its sixth day today. Currently jailed for standing in solidarity with the people of Siang who chose to resist a forceful crackdown and heavy militarisation. The community continues its fight against the might of state oppression, firmly opposing a mega hydro project being forced upon them against their will. I know people will not bend, and India’s guns do not scare them. May you continue to stand with Siang and her people.

What happened in Pasighat would not have happened had DGP Jamwal, SP Lamba, and the government handled it well. At this point, I have nothing to say about the police action against me and Sunny Tayeng, and their illegal surveillance. I just wish they had asked lawyer Sunny Tayeng, who is appearing for anti-dam activists Ebo Mili, Tajong Talom, Otul Jerang, and many others, and me at least once instead of asking for a search warrant from the court. Sunny is a busy lawyer and brilliant at her work, so she needs to focus on her practice rather than being burdened by extra work. We will see what happens tomorrow so will you all. Please be reassured that I have seen enough intimidation in my life, so this isn’t something that will stop me from writing or my activism. More power to the people of Siang valley and Arunachal. We owe it to Siang and her people. I will continue to stand with the people of Siang Valley, with Ebo Mili, Otul Jerang, and Tajong Talom, who are in judicial custody in Pasighat, and Adum Tayum, Okut Palloh, Oson Paron, and Omak Paron, who are in jail under APUAPA. Please don’t get distracted by the East Siang district police action against Sunny and me. They would not have done it without someone’s direction. Please continue talking about Siang and her people. Once again, thank you very much for the solidarity.

Tongam is one of the most fearless journalists I know. By good measure, one of the most respected one from Arunachal Pradesh. She is also my sister. For years she has written without fear and without favour to the political-contractor class.
For this she was once shot at in 2012 and barely survived the attack on her life. That never stopped her. This won't either. I know.
Sunny is a lawyer of great repute, who takes on a lot of public purposed litigation to support people. She is a lawyer for the environmental activists. I know her well too.
Neither journalism nor defending your clients is a crime.
Using state power to intimidate is a crime.
🚨 Arunachal Pradesh police applies for search warrants against one of state's most respected journalists, Tongam Rina, associate editor @arunachaltimes_ and lawyer Sunny Tayeng who represents environmental activists Ebo Milli, Otul Jerang and Tajong Talom.

I write of his long incarceration, his torment & then his conversion to Christianity

A #solidarityrally for the people of #Siang is underway in #Itanagar, with organisers calling for the #protection of rivers, land, Indigenous identity, and the rights of local communities. The #SiangValley has been the scene of violent confrontations because the state has militarised the area to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the #SiangUpperMultipurposeProject, which the Adi Indigenous communities strongly oppose. Leeches have started making videos about the fellowship money Bhanu received. NHPC is spending 10.9 crore on PR in favour of the dam but according to the IT Cell, 20 lakh in fellowship funding is a foreign conspiracy. 😭😭 They’ve completely abandoned all logic.
Rs 10 Cr NHPC campaign is at work through the BJP IT cell. Obviously, they are RSS-indoctrinated people who are incapable of critical thinking, believing that the concept of India first excludes its minorities and their rights. Many are outright racists, and some have started doxxing Northeast people working in mainland India. This is troubling. Even more troubling is that you cannot approach the police, as their bosses are the same. #SaveSiang

Before @IndianExpress reported on it, this is what I had reported on how NHPC pumped ₹10.9 crore into a PR campaign that was aimed at shaping the narrative around proposed Siang dam. Would have been nice of Express to give credit.

Dead Mainland,
I am tired of this news about Chinese intrusions. it’s old news though the recent admission by the ITBP chief is interesting. Also, intrusions usually peak during the summer months. In winter, the mountains are snow-capped, so intrusion is less likely. The news you should really be covering is the Siang Upper hydro project and the indigenous people’s resistance against militarisation.

Indian Express's big HL from today is about NHPC's "PR push" over the proposed Siang dam — a story @Bengiaajum broke nearly a week ago:

Good journalism requires we credit — a newspaper giant can afford to, esp. when it's building on work by NE reporters.

If you’ve questioned the state's oppression of indigenous resistance against the Upper Siang Mega Project or supported the Gen Z protests, you’ve likely been attacked by pro-Modi and pro-Pema right-wingers. small dick energy labeling everyone a Chinese agent. Read this report and see why they’re dancing to the state's tune: ₹10 crore has been funneled purely into pro-SUMP publicity.

Tadak Nalo, the founder and chairman of the Arunachal Frontier Tribal Front (#AFTF), has alleged that his Facebook page, "#TadakNalo for Revolution," was restricted in India. Nalo has recently been raising the issue of the #SiangUpperMultipurposeProject and alleged #Chinese encroachment into Indian state of #Arunachal.

Otul Jerang is a young schoolteacher. Polite, soft-spoken, he speaks straight from his heart about his people and the Siang River. I first heard him speak during a rally in Pasighat against the Upper Siang Multipurpose Project—a project that will affect his own village. He is currently in police custody after the GenZ protest took a violent turn in Pasighat. Please do listen to him explain why he chose to surrender to the police.

It’s rare to find people like Ebo Mili in Arunachal Pradesh. Absolutely resolute and committed to ensuring that indigenous communities are heard, and that the Indian state cannot bully them, @Ebo_Mili_Linggi is one of a kind. While elected representatives have compromised their positions in the name of national security, Ebo has stood firmly with the state's indigenous people. As the state began militarising the Siang Valley without the people's consent, Ebo has been in Siang Valley. Ebo is currently in the custody of the Arunachal police along with Otul Jerang, following a Gen Z protest in Pasighat that turned violent after police used force to disperse the crowd on Friday evening. Please do listen to his reasons for surrendering to the police.

Tadak Nalo, Chairman of the Arunachal Frontier Tribal Front (#AFTF), has warned the state government to shift its approach regarding the #SiangUpperMultipurposeProject (#SUMP). He demanded the immediate release of all detained youths and the withdrawal of #securityforces from the #Siang belt. Failure to comply, Nalo stated, will trigger a series of #democraticprotests in the state capital.

State will have to take responsibility for the violence that has escalated in Pasighat. You can’t expect people to keep quiet in the face of state oppression for years in the name of national security. Shah, Modi, and Khandu, this is a response to your provocation and your sponsored violence on people who are opposed to Siang Upper hydro project. NHPC office

Five women are reported injured after police tear-gassed them during the ongoing anti-Siang Upper Multipurpose Project bandh across Siang, Upper Siang, and parts of East Siang. People have scaled up protests against the Siang hydropower plans, and so has the brutality by the state police and the CAPF in an attempt to crush the movement.
