@NOIPolls at the 79th Annual WAPOR Conference, Mexico City. 🇳🇬 🇲🇽
The warmth and hospitality of Mexico City have been matched by intellectual depth and rich discussions at the 79th Annual @WAPOR Conference.
Bringing together international researchers, survey practitioners, pollsters and institutional representatives, the conference has provided an important platform for exploring the evolving role of public opinion in a rapidly changing global landscape.
From discussions on legal restrictions affecting public opinion research to hands-on workshops anchored by Diana Zavala-Rojas, Fransico Olivos, methodological advancements research in survey sampling in the digital age, advances in survey methods in the global south, and exchanges on emerging issues, the conference has highlighted the importance of credible and context-sensitive research in understanding citizens' perspectives.
With over 300 papers to be presented, the gathering has created valuable opportunities to challenge assumptions, share knowledge, explore new methodologies, and promote collaborations across research communities.
@NOIPolls is contributing to these conversations through two research papers that examine public opinion in Nigeria, focusing on foreign policy and democracy. These studies bring Nigerian perspectives into broader discussions about international relations, democratic governance, and the place of public opinion in an emerging multipolar world order. As global political and economic relationships continue to evolve, it is increasingly important that perspectives from Nigeria and the wider Global South are meaningfully represented in international research and policy conversations.
At Beyond Abuja: Rethinking Rental Affordability and Housing Crisis, we united industry leaders, urban planners, and policy experts for a dynamic exchange of ideas. Our panelists and stakeholders revealed powerful insights into the forces transforming today’s housing markets.

Meet our Speakers!
In major cities, rising rents, multi-year payment demands, and stagnant incomes are placing significant financial strain on millions of working households. In Abuja, recent data shows that 71% of residents now find it much harder to meet rent obligations than three years ago.
Professor Taibat Lawanson, an accomplished scholar, will discuss how research, policy, and advocacy can promote inclusive cities and support sustainable livelihoods, housing reform, urban economics, and residential financing. She will offer insights on how policy interventions and private-sector models can address Nigeria's housing deficit.
We invite you to join this important conversation on housing in Nigeria.

Dr. Temilade Sesan,
As the Lagos City Manager for the African Cities Research Consortium and an environmental consultant, Dr. @temiladesesan engages policymakers, stakeholders, civil society, academia, and businesses to address social and political barriers to poverty alleviation in Nigeria.
Frequent rent increases can deepen poverty by reducing the income households have for essential needs. When rent outpaces earnings, it creates ongoing financial vulnerability. Households may struggle to build assets, relocate farther from employment, and risk losing access to stable, adequate housing.

Across urban Nigeria, especially in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), citizens face an unsustainable housing crisis. Rent increases of 40% to 100% each year force low and middle-income earners to move far to the edges of the city. This puts a heavy strain on infrastructure, family budgets, and mental health.
Fixing Nigeria’s housing problem means going beyond quick fixes to big changes in the institutions involved.
Tomorrow, we convene stakeholders to discuss practical solutions and the future of housing in Nigeria.
Let’s amplify the conversation!
