I've been working on a profile of Lauren Boebert for @nymag, and it's finally out today: The Last Stand of a MAGA Party Girl. She bucked Trump on Epstein, got ensnared in a sex scandal, and is now fighting for her political life. nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…

incredible story and especially @svzwood army crawling under Hasan Piker's livestream: "She said I was jejune. Which, I didn’t even know the word. It means ‘shallow, stupid.’” I told him The New Yorker’s Andrew Marantz had also once called him jejune." nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…

A new piece from me on @NYMag is out today. It is the second installment in a reporting trilogy I’m calling “AI and the Chinese society.” Earlier this year, I visited China’s largest get-rich-with-AI company, which sells AI courses for profits. It has more than 80,000 paying members. Its meeting rooms have names like “Apostle of the Method” and “Evangelist.” Their membership system resembles a pyramid scheme. I was greeted by Mr. Tree, an in-house influencer and AI educator whose social media bio promises to “search for 100 business answers in the age of AI”—an echo of Beijing’s “AI Plus” plan. The company felt like a prosperity-gospel church, and salvation meant adopting AI as fast as you can. In Liangzhu, China’s vibe-coding capital, which I wrote about, young people give one another AI lessons for free in their living rooms. I also met Xiaokai, a 25-year-old filmmaker who became a pro on AI video generation through free classes, built a business earning several million yuan in profit, and now walks red carpets in Shanghai and Beijing. To understand this AI education craze, I found peoples’ fear of being left behind, their religious faith in education, and millions of ordinary people trying to find a place for themselves in a AI future Beijing is summoning on behalf of everyone. ----- Earlier this week, @KaiserKuo and I chatted about this trilogy on the great @SinicaPodcast in detail and some behind-the-scenes stories. You can listen to it now (links in the comments)! Also. Many thanks to my wonderful editor, Joy Shan; my fact-checker, Jessica Suriano; and some friends who read the draft and offered feedback.

Some pretty jaw-dropping details in here
I asked Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand if it bothers her that her staff trades crypto while she works on legislation that benefits the industry. “This is not a nanny state,” she said. Profiled crypto’s favorite Democrat for @NYMag: nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…

Finally had time to read the OTHER big Maine politics of the day by the great @rtraister, which has been getting litigated in my group texts all day. She has far more reporting inside the campaign than I do, but lots of it is consistent with what I'm seeing from the outside on the ground in Midcoast Maine (which may be different from other parts of state). Many Dems I talk to feel like they still don't know Troy Jackson. Worry he's kind of MIA. Worry he's not doing enough public events to generate earned media to counter Collins' spend. Grass tops activists eager to help, but having trouble getting campaign to respond. Complaints about delayed deliveries of, you guessed it, yard signs. There's lots of sympathy for Jackson and his campaign, acknowledging they were put in a tough situation and that it takes time to spin up. And many feel like it doesn't really matter since this race is all about Susan Colins anway. But early voting starts Oct. 5 and Demxiety is real. nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…

A campaign team that tries to sand down a candidate’s “rough” edges or hide the candidate’s authentic self completely misunderstands what voters are hungry for in 2026. Realllllly hope the Jackson staff takes the obvious frustration to heart here… nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…
