“This verdict should not be seen as the end of the chapter, but rather as a beginning of many effective reforms. I still remember the words on the wall of that cage.” My Oped in the NYT about the happy news of our acquittal from the #NGOtrial today. nytimes.com/2018/12/20/opini…

It was expected that the UAE's Lana Nusseibeh would glide to victory in the Secretary General race. Today's vote at the Security Council suggests that's not the case.

You can’t make this up. Minouche Shafik, the former @Columbia president who caved to hostile politicians in a disastrous hearing, called the NYPD onto her own campus, had students arrested by the hundreds, then resigned in disgrace, is now in charge of @LSEnews new forum for “democratic debate.”
Will she call the police on the debaters too?

Because this day keeps getting more insane, during her 7-hour detention today, @Linaattalah was informed there is a 1-year absentia prison sentence against her on charges of publishing false news and managing an unlicensed website.
A retrial is now scheduled for November 11.
Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was released following several hours in custody after the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court convicted her on the charge of managing a website without a license during the first hearing in the session this morning.
The court imposed the maximum penalty for the charge, a LE3 million fine and an order for the closure of Mada Masr’s website and the confiscation of its equipment and devices.
Mada Masr paid the fine in full to the court, waiting several hours before procedures were taken for Attalah’s release.
During the release procedures, Attalah learned of a one-year prison sentence issued against her in absentia in 2024, on charges of publishing false news and managing an unlicensed website. Her lawyers took steps to challenge the ruling, with a hearing in a retrial of the case scheduled for November 11.
During the court session this morning, the court refused to accede to defense lawyers’ requests for an opportunity to review the case file, to submit additional evidence to the court and for additional witnesses to be heard. It then appointed an unknown party to act as Attalah’s defense lawyer, despite the presence of her appointed defense counsel in court and her own objection to being represented by a court-appointed attorney, according to the director of the Egyptian Initiative for Human Rights, Hossam Bahgat.

Lina Attalah has been released from custody several hours after she was convicted of operating an unlicensed website & forced to pay a EGP 3 million fine. The court also ordered the closure of Mada Masr. A pillar of independent journalism in the Arab world is in danger of closing

Today’s decision represents a crushing blow to press freedom in Egypt and marks a dark day for independent journalism in the country.
By imposing a 3 million EGP fine, ordering the closure of Mada Masr and the seizure of its property, and detaining Lina Atallah until payment is made, the Egyptian authorities are sending a clear and ruthless message: critical, independent reporting will not be tolerated.

After Brazil's first round election, @CIPolicyJournal's @AthertonKD spoke with @MPaarlberg about the return of Bolsonarismo. Lula beat expectations and won the second round over Flavio, but many of the structural obstacles persist. Read more in our Q&A internationalpolicy.org/publ…

ALT The most likely case for there to be extralegal actions were if Lula were to win in the second round. If that were to happen, it is likely that the Bolsonaristas would refuse to recognize the result, and would create a constitutional crisis. Were that to happen, I would not count on the Trump administration to play a helpful role.
