Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cybersecurity and building a secure, resilient and inclusive digital economy, as Cyber Week Africa 2026 concluded in Nairobi with a call for enhanced continental cooperation in addressing emerging cyber threats.
The conference, which brought together more than 1,200 delegates from over 20 African countries, focused on “Cyber Threat Intelligence in the Age of AI,” providing a platform for government leaders, policymakers, regulators, technology experts, financial institutions, academia and young innovators to exchange knowledge and explore strategies for securing Africa's digital future.
During the closing ceremony, participants adopted the Nairobi Declaration on Cyber Threat Intelligence in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), committing to stronger regional collaboration in combating cybercrime, financial fraud and other emerging digital threats.
A key commitment under the declaration is the establishment of National AI-Powered Financial and e-Crime Reporting and Information Bureaus in participating African countries. The proposed institutions will facilitate coordinated reporting, secure intelligence-sharing, cross-border investigations and the tracing of illicit financial flows. A technical working group is expected to develop an implementation roadmap within six months.
The closing remarks, by the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Interior and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo, read by the Principal Administrative Secretary in the Ministry Jacob Narengo, highlighted Kenya's progress in expanding digital infrastructure and access to technology.
The country has established 391 fully equipped digital hubs in learning institutions and communities, with plans to increase the number to 1,450. Additionally, 10,382 public junior schools across all 47 counties have been equipped with smart boards and laptops, while more than 22,000 government services are accessible online.
On cybersecurity capacity development, over 60 young innovators participated in a competition showcasing AI-powered cybersecurity defence solutions, with women accounting for more than half of the participants. Nineteen officers from the Ministry and other government agencies also received professional certification during the conference.
The remarks further underscored the importance of strengthening institutional cybersecurity capabilities, noting that the Government is advancing national cybersecurity coordination and developing policy frameworks to address emerging technological risks. These include the draft AI and emerging Technologies Policy, which has been opened for public input.
Participants were challenged to strengthen intelligence-sharing across national borders, establish direct cooperation channels and invest in young cybersecurity professionals, emphasizing that Africa must move beyond being a consumer of cybersecurity solutions to becoming a producer of its own security technologies and expertise.
The conference concluded with a call for African countries to take turns hosting future editions of Cyber Week Africa, expanding continental ownership and cooperation in building a trusted and secure digital ecosystem.

Africa’s cybercrime threat is escalating as digital adoption outpaces investment in cybersecurity. Shabir Ahmed, Senior Vice President and Customer Solutions Centre Lead for Africa at @Mastercard, says the continent faces a growing risk from increasingly sophisticated criminal networks, with South Africa among the markets attracting heightened attention.
With around 200,000 cybersecurity roles unfilled across Africa and artificial intelligence intensifying threats, Ahmed says stronger collaboration, skills development and investment in cyber defences will be critical to protecting businesses and consumers.

En 2009, il a rejoint l'American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) comme chercheur invité (senior scholar).
