#AdventWellbeing Day 3. School culture around mental health is a culture shared with safeguarding, attendance, behaviour and learning. It has to be consistent and holistic. It should also embrace a culture of 'noticing'.
See more in The School Mental Health Toolkit.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to put #NewToSLTChat on hold for a while whilst I think through whether I can continue or not. It’s a lot of effort and whilst I’m so grateful for those faithful, lovely people who always take part, I don’t feel it’s as popular as it was and…
perhaps it’s reached a natural breaking point, at least for a while. Also a lot going on for me so it’s probably the right time… for now.
Wishing all of you amazing educators and everyone working in education a wonderful holiday season in the build up to Christmas. Keep…

I just read a study that said that the more we teach “normal” kids how to interact with special needs children, the more special needs children had improved social skills from having peer models and someone willing to interact with them.

Give students opportunities to interact without the pressure of academics and I think it will surprise people more than they think. Most kids are naturally sympathetic and the more we normalize interaction the less they are viewed as “other”.

Even “entitled” parents are trying to make sure their children have what they need to be successful. I’d rather work with an entitled parent than an absent one.

A3 encouraging family involvement from the beginning. We have recently restructured our meetings to have students/families lead the meeting and staff provide suggestions for support to help achieve their family identified goal. Stop treating kids as one size fits all

We have recently implemented a change in our district where the students and families lead all Plan meetings. The teacher’s job is to explain how appropriate supports at school based on a student’s current level can be provided to help achieve the goals of the student/family.

A2 before we can make groundbreaking change, first we need to make sure we’re providing the accommodations that are already supposed to be in place. If there’s questions about why, ask. If you disagree with the accommodations, show your data. Make these decisions as a team.
