ALT We are both angry and saddened by the scenes of attempted lynchings, pogroms and riots against our migrant siblings across England this weekend. Fascist riots on our streets have resulted in people of colour being attacked across the country. We are lucky that we are in Newham - one of the most diverse boroughs in Britain and a true success story of immigration and multiculturalism. This success does not happen by accident. Newham has faced racism and fascism before in the form of Mosely and his blackshirts in the 30s and a racist council and National Front presence in the 70s and 80s. Each time Newham was targeted by racist elements, residents stood up, resisted and protected their neighbours. Mosely’s Fascist meetings on the flats were disrupted by the local community and we are indebted to organisations like the Newham Youth Project, Newham Monitoring Project and the Asian Women’s Project for their roles in the rejection of fascism in the 70s and 80s.

ALT The words and actions of these mobs have been racist, islamophobic and anti migrant but fascism is not able to raise its head like this if conditions aren’t there for it. Over the past decade we have seen rising inequality and public service erosion. We have also seen a political class who stoke fires of racism and islamophobia on the right and refuse to argue that immigration is good and desirable on the left. The responsibility for these conditions lie at the feet of our politicians and media. Centrist and right wing politicians will not defeat fascism. Arrests will not defeat fascism. Communities defeat fascism.
