Solidarity with the Czech TV and Czech Radio as they fight for #FreedomOfThePress.
For the people. Not for politicians.
Fellow foreign journalists, we in the Czech Republic need your help. We're going on a strike. The current Czech government is following the fallen authoritarian leader of Hungary Viktor Orban and too wants to nationalize Czech Television and Czech Radio. It now, after the midterm election debacle, wants to do so before the public has a chance to voice its opinion. It is hastily convening evening and Saturday sessions of the Chamber of Deputies.
The coalition is signaling that it fears the public’s reaction. It is disregarding the opinions of experts, who argue that such a fundamental step as changing the funding of public media must be thoroughly discussed and prepared.
The @verejnopravne_ initiative firmly opposes the attempt to push through the nationalization of @CzechTV and @CRozhlas. Experts from the Czech Republic and abroad, a significant portion of society, and both media outlets have clearly stated that the government’s plan threatens the independence and stability of both media outlets. Instead of engaging in a substantive debate, the coalition has decided to force the proposal through.
In addition to the fact that the rushed developments in this matter threaten the independence and stability of both media outlets, they will also have a negative impact on the state budget, for which the cabinet has already proposed an exceptionally high deficit. The nationalization of public media will thus hit the wallets of all citizens of the Czech Republic.
The government is thereby forcing the employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio to stage a full-day strike. It will take place on Tuesday, November 3.
We call on everyone who cares about the future of Czech Television and Czech Radio to make their position known publicly and loudly. We, the employees of both institutions, are prepared to defend both public media outlets.
For the people. Not for politicians.
Stop the bots! The @PioneerPress union is fighting for AI protections in our contract. If you don't want a bot clone of your favorite reporter writing stories under their byline, tell our bosses to keep our coverage human:

Should an AI bot write your news? The unionized employees of the @PioneerPress don't think so.
Tell our bosses that you don't want an algorithm deciding what you read: act.aflcio.org/letters/tell-…
We're hiring! Send all the stellar bookkeepers you know this way.

Fantastic news!!! The Supreme Court declined to hear the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s appeal of a ruling requiring the company to pay back its workers for the cuts to pay, illegally implemented increases in health care costs & more. When we fight, we win!!! ✊✊✊
Breaking: Post-Gazette union-busters have hit a dead end at Supreme Court and must pay back millions to @newsguild-CWA journalists.

Hear it directly from our member, Frederick Melo, about how things are going at the Pioneer Press Bargaining.
In the past two weeks, I've penned or significantly contributed to about 24 articles (bylines and taglines), averaging more than 2 stories per workday. And we're talking some whopper topics that have spanned multiple back-to-back stories I wish I'd had the time to look into even further, including:
A) The Northern Iron Foundry calling it quits
B) The city's closure of the Pig's Eye homeless encampment
C) The St. Paul City Council attempting to block a "Right to Repair" renter measure
D) The St. Paul City Council settling a defamation suit for $350,000
E) A look at 21 new businesses that opened downtown
F) The county commissioner race (Isa vs. Noecker)
G) The mayor's city budget address
H) A sex harassment investigation involving the mayor and police
I) Fringe Festival reviews
Nope, I don't pretend for a moment that I tackled all of those stories (or any of those, really) alone. We've got a great team at the @PioneerPress, but it's smaller than ever, and this pace is unsustainable. Also, the pay sucks.
We need more reporters, a raise and some guarantees around here... Say it with me, St. Paul. For everyone working in the @PioneerPress newsroom: "FAIR CONTRACT NOW!"
We're a quarter of the way to our goal. Thanks to everyone who has donated already. It means the world.
If you can, please donate to help our laid-off colleagues:

We've done our best to soften the impact but now we need your help to support these members as their lives are changed through no fault of their own.
All donations will go directly to the affected members.

Many thanks to everyone who donated so far. We are still a long way toward reaching our goal of providing a soft landing for approximately 30 Guild members who will be laid off in 2 weeks due to no fault of their own.

Imani Cruzen just described working at her previous paper, which is down to one reporter (who lives out of state). My experience at the Community Newspaper Co. of Massachusetts wasn’t too much better. Cutting journalism jobs while pocketing the ad dollars is unethical and hurts watchdog coverage of your community! Jon Schleuss,
President of NewsGuild-CWA, brings it home:
When @PioneerPress contract negotiations start in a few minutes, local management/editors won’t be at the table. They live here, they’re on our side and want to hire more reporters at higher wages. Alden Global Capital, a hedge fund, has flown in corporate attorneys from California. That ain’t St. Paul!
