This seems like a great time to reshare my favourite Sir Patrick Stewart performance, ‘What has the ECHR ever done for us?’ It’s just perfect in every possible way … including the ending 😂😂😂 RIP. 🎥 The Guardian

🇫🇷 French police have left protesters with injuries that human rights lawyers told outlets compare to those seen in conflict zones, as a student uprising over crumbling schools and the cost of living enters its fifth week. Over Saturday and Sunday alone, French outlets StreetPress, Index and ViolencesPolicières(dot)fr collected several hundred videos and testimonies. Cases they documented include: 🔸 A 17-year-old in Saint-Étienne whose hand was torn off by a police grenade 🔸 A 17-year-old girl in Mulhouse who lost the sight in her left eye after being hit by a tear gas grenade 🔸 Protesters in Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg and Besançon beaten with batons and kicked while on the ground, including one held in a chokehold France's police watchdog has opened at least 36 investigations into police violence against high school protesters. Christophe Calvao, president of the Paris Young Lawyers' Union, denounced "an increasingly systematic use of crowd-control measures that would normally be reserved for much more serious situations." Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has said police "must be able to use all intermediate weapons," and on Tuesday vowed to "step up" for the next mobilization. France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon said his party and unions know how to keep marches peaceful by deploying hundreds of volunteers, adding: "We could at least expect police to do something other than fire indiscriminately into the crowd." Melenchon also noted that most European countries ban such grenades, and that Nuñez suspended them only to reinstate them "not even 48 hours" later. 🎥 Edited by @samivanderlip. (Compilation of videos circulating online).

Why are there so many riots in France? Why are the French riot police so violent? Well the questions answer each other. An excellent article here on why French police tactics are so appalling and ineffective, and why they have no interest in improving. theguardian.com/world/2026/o…

A man died at Saturday’s march in Paris. The police claim he collapsed on boulevard Magenta, protesters carried him to the Château d’Eau emergency post, and he died at its doors in cardiorespiratory arrest before anyone treated him. Since then, videos spreading online show police beating a street medic, and many people say he is the same man who died. @NunezLaurent, as Interior Minister you owe the public answers:
Is the man in this video the man who died?
What happened to him in the minutes before he collapsed?
Why did he die at the door of an emergency post with no one there to treat him?
Has an autopsy been ordered, and will his family and the public see the results?
Will all police & surveillance footage from boulevard Magenta be preserved and released?

On October 9, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) itself—the court of last resort for victims of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. This was the latest step in a rolling series of sanctions against individual judges, prosecutors, and human rights actors who have worked for and with the ICC. The Open Society Foundations are fighting the sanctions regime in federal court. The sanctions are part of an escalating campaign which, as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in July, is intended to “dismantle the ICC—brick by brick, if necessary.” Already concerned about the sanctions in place since 2025, we, together with the American Friends Service Committee @afsc_org, the Center for Constitutional Rights @theCCR, and Human Rights Watch @hrw, filed a lawsuit in federal court in New York on August 11, 2026. The case argues that the sanctions regime exceeds presidential authority, violates constitutional protections of free expression and association, and is unconstitutionally vague. The ICC is where victims of the gravest crimes—from Gaza to Ukraine to the Philippines—can turn when their own governments will not act, and where even heads of state can be made to answer. The Trump administration’s sanctions are designed to close that door, and to punish anyone who helps keep it open.

58 years ago today, Tommie Smith and John Carlos performed the Black Power salute at the Olympics that outraged millions of white Americans. It was an act of protest by the U.S. athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos during their medal ceremony at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City. As they turned to face their flags and hear the American national anthem (The Star-Spangled Banner), they each raised a Black-gloved fist and kept them raised until the anthem had finished. Smith, Carlos and Australian silver medalist Peter Norman all wore human rights badges on their jackets. The event is regarded as one of the most overtly political statements in the history of the modern Olympic Games. Both athletes were kicked off the US team for their protest.

Sussex Police officers PC Stephen Smith and PC Rachel Comotto have been sacked after pepper-spraying and Tasering 92-year-old Donald Burgess, a single-leg amputee living with dementia, at his care home. Smith sprayed almost an entire can pepper spray directly into Burgess’s face and struck him with a baton before Comotto tasered him, all within 83 seconds of entering his room. Investigators found Burgess posed no immediate threat to himself or anyone else, and the officers made no attempt to de-escalate the situation. Burgess was taken to hospital afterwards, where he contracted Covid-19 and died 22 days later but the IOPC said that the officers’ actions did not cause or contribute to his death.
