"Reform's alternative budget released today includes many proposals that will finally get Britain's economy growing again.
Abolishing the Energy Profits Levy will play a crucial role in ensuring the country's energy security, which a recent ASI index ranked below Romania and Ukraine. Windfall taxes undermine the incentive on firms to be ready to drill when prices are high: without them, the UK's domestic energy supply will be far more secure, and the country will be less vulnerable to price hikes and energy crises. It will also lower electricity costs at a time of eye-wateringly high energy prices, which will cost the average family an extra £206 in the coming year.
The alternative budget's proposals will also give a desperately needed boost to housebuilding. Leaving the Aarhus convention, which paralyses planning reviews and raises costs for developers, will make it easier and faster to build new homes. Repealing Biodiversity Net Gain rules will also reduce costs and delays for housebuilders, 94% of which have been hit by delays due to the rule.
Taken together, these changes will mean more houses are built faster and for a lower cost - which will go a long way to solving Britain's housing crisis. If done right, planning deregulation like those proposed by this alternative budget could single-handedly raise long-run GDP by 7.05% - a rise of almost £3,000 per person."

🪖 The chagos spat rumbles on in DC
Now the Department of War chiming in — per senior official;
“I can't get into operational details, but I can tell you that for us Diego Garcia is a critical strategic asset.
“Anyone trying to use that as a domestic political football like Ms. Badenoch appears to have done overnight, is not someone who would be taken seriously by any administration, Democrat or Republican, on matters of national security.
“Honestly, if I were her, I'd be ashamed and probably apologise at this point.”
🚨Row brewing tonight after latest “shocking” Chagos argie bargie in the Tele.
A senior Trump administration official tells me:
“We are confused at why @KemiBadenoch is attacking @Nigel_Farage.”
“I'm surprised by the idea that a Conservative government would not let us access that base.
“That's shocking to me.”
“We are confused by what Kemi Badenoch is saying.
“We understood Nigel Farage's comments to mean that we would get perpetual use of the base, which, frankly, we've always had.
“The only disturbance in that equilibrium, that partnership, has been the Labour government trying to give the Chagos Islands away in this kind of self-abnegating, anti-colonial interaction.
“It sounds like Kemi is now saying she would not [access].
“The fact that the UK would hand over the islands in the first place comes as a surprise to us in the context of our alliance.
“We want the UK to come to its senses on Chagos.
“We hear a lot of squabbling that doesn't make much sense.
“What to do with these islands is obvious, which is not a seed to anti-civilizational, third world lawfare and activism.
“Stand up for what's yours.
“Stand up for what's historically been yours.”

A second US official adds:
“At no point did anyone in the administration construe Nigel’s comments as suggesting that he was giving away the Chagos Islands.
“He was obviously referring to the use of the Diego Garcia military base, which is critical to countering threats from China and Iran.
“Anyone claiming otherwise is peddling fake news and undermining the Anglo-American relationship, including, apparently, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch.”
Oof.
