If the Election Commission is adding voters’ names after the election, it owes the nation a clear explanation: why were eligible voters left out when voting took place? If those exclusions resulted from errors or wrongdoing, the Election Commission must admit it, apologise to the affected voters and take responsibility. In a democracy, every single vote matters. If lakhs of eligible citizens were deprived of their right to vote, merely adding their names afterwards cannot undo what happened on polling day. Where such wrongful exclusions materially affected an election, the appropriate legal process for a fresh election must follow. The same friendly gesture should be extended to our Congress candidate in Rejinagar. Yes, there is a difficult past. Congress workers in Bengal faced attacks and intimidation, our organisation was weakened and elected representatives crossed over to TMC. Their sentiments, trust and acceptance cannot be ignored. But if Mamata Banerjee genuinely wants to return to the Congress with her MPs and MLAs, we are prepared to work under her leadership in Bengal.
