On this day in 1974, the GPO Customer Service Department received copy from the White House for the Watergate Transcripts. The document was produced by GPO in record-breaking time. The Production Department, operating under strict security precautions, produced 50 copies of the 1,308-page job for the White House by 6 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, and completed delivery of 2,000 copies ordered by 4 p.m. that afternoon.
Two months after the production, Public Printer McCormick received a letter from President Nixon that stated, “The assistance provided by the Government Printing Office in recent days has been outstanding, and I welcome this opportunity to commend you and each of your colleagues at the GPO for your exceptional service. The preparation of the transcriptions was an especially demanding task requiring not only your usual fine skills and accuracy but also many long hours of dedicated work under the most challenging time constraints. That you were able to carry out this special project so successfully is a tribute to high quality of performance which has long characterized the GPO.”

Unable to sleep, President Richard Nixon made a late night visit to the Lincoln Memorial #OTD in 1970. Several students -many of them in town to protest Nixon's policies- gathered around him, talking awkwardly. As the sun rose, Nixon returned to the White House.
