Been living in Florida now for 3 months-St Petersburg, downtown-Very much enjoy living here, weather is awesome, city is tremendously walkable with a great waterfront district and a very lively downtown scene. However, they do have a homeless issue with quite a few hanging out in the downtown area- it’s nowhere near to West coast numbers but it’s still an issue. I walk my dogs 3-4 times a day around the downtown and up to this point the homeless folks are largely benign but we do tend to give them a bit of a wide berth as some of them are clearly mentally ill. Today while walking with my wife, who is strong but very petite a homeless guy approached us and was fairly aggressive in his demeanor. Now he was fairly scrawny and probably on drugs, mentally ill or likely a combo of both. Given that I’m 6’5” around 250 lbs, strong as an ox and can fight-I’m not too worried- however scrapping with one of these folks can definitely expose you to certain diseases and there is really zero upside to doing so. My wife will not walk around downtown at night by herself and I don’t blame her. Last census shows about 1800 homeless people in the local county and many of them sleep on the streets downtown and I see them every morning when we take the dogs for their first morning walk around 6:30 am. Back in the old days we used to have state run in-patient psychiatric facilities which were largely phased out by about the 1980s as the push was to put more people on anti psychotic drugs and to give them the least restrictive environment possible. The old insane asylums, as these facilities were often called, typically had low budgets, fed them cheap carb based diets and sometimes subjected them to cruel practices. I’m not sure if anyone would be willing to do it, but I’d bet that at least some of these folks suffering from mental disease and drug addiction could actually be helped with a inpatient keto/carnivore style diet for a few months-there is already a decent amount of pilot data showing this to be effective. My guess is that feeding these folks ground beef and eggs for 3-6 months at a facility would actually end up being cheaper than dealing with the episodic acute care that many of them get when they regularly show up at the ERs. It would be an interesting pilot study/program to try. What say you @MayorKenWelch or @CharlieCrist

Some Emerald Coast vibes from this week

The article “The Surprising Science of an All-Meat Diet,” which I published last week, is now on the most-read list for health articles and uptrending. This morning, I also finished an interview with a major newspaper in the United Kingdom that was interested in covering my perspective on saturated fat and cholesterol for National Cholesterol Month in the UK. A brief summary of my two major positions, because I don’t think they’re at all radical. I’ll be as concise as possible and link to more information below. 1) First, the carnivore diet is a tool, not a religion. It’s a mistake to present it as the best diet for humans or to make strong claims that go beyond the literature, such as that it will improve longevity. What we can say, accurately and humbly, is that it’s helping many people who have struggled with debilitating disorders and failed to find support through conventional approaches. We can also say that there is strong biological plausibility for many of the conditions for which it’s being used, including mental health disorders and autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. That’s not definitive proof. But it’s a possibility that deserves curiosity and compassion, not disdain. If you want the full scientific breakdown in video form: “The Strange Science of Eating Only Meat” youtu.be/WJnPDQ0XRXA 2) The second major point I’ll make is that CONTEXT matters. Meat is vilified largely because of its saturated fat and cholesterol content. However, when it comes to improving the cardiometabolic health of the general population, focusing on reducing saturated fat intake is like worrying about a mosquito when you’re being chased by a tiger. We now have randomized controlled trial data showing that low-carbohydrate ketogenic diets (despite typically being much higher in saturated fat and cholesterol) can provide greater improvements in many cardiometabolic risk markers than low-fat plant-based or Mediterranean-style diets higher in carbohydrates, particularly in people with obesity and insulin resistance. More here: staycuriousmetabolism.substa… At the end of the day, I don’t fancy myself a carnivore fanboy. Just carnivore-curious and open-minded. That’s enough. P.S. There’s a tendency to make meat and diet unnecessarily political. Resist that tendency. What’s on my plate does not inform what I do at the ballot box. Stereotypes impair our ability to have thoughtful academic discourse. Ht/ @MikhailaFuller for her contribution (including the click-boost from her adorable baby) @EpochTimes
Kudos to @MikhailaFuller for sharing her story with The @EpochTimes and discussing the carnivore diet in a way that is not dogmatic nor tribal. theepochtimes.com/health/the… Conclusion: "Maybe we’ve been framing the carnivore diet wrong all along: it’s not a religion to join or a movement to mock, but a tool...occasionally exactly the right tool for the right person at the right moment in their life. It deserves rigorous study, an open mind, and above all, curiosity." If you don’t think that’s reasonable, I’d take a look in the mirror.

Heart disease is still the number one killer, and a lot of doctors are still focusing on the wrong risk factor. Dr. Ovadia and I talk insulin resistance, plaque, and why 70 years of cholesterol panic did not stop the heart attacks. If your last doctor visit was only about LDL, watch this. youtu.be/hhED9m-JO1Q

Will a keto/carnivore diet cause a heart attack? I asked a heart surgeon. Dr. Ovadia has done thousands of heart operations. He talks about sugar, seed oils, cholesterol panic, and the food that actually lands people on the table. If your doctor is saying no red meat, watch this. youtu.be/TlYTnYnVN0c

Is the carnivore diet dangerous? That is what we get asked all week. Dr. Chaffee and I go through fiber, fat, cholesterol, electrolytes, autoimmune issues, and the rest of the scare list. If someone is trying to talk you out of eating meat, watch this. youtu.be/bVj_kYUM0Sk
