Freddie Mercury called Elton John "Sharon," Rod Stewart "Phyllis," Brian May "Maggie," Roger Taylor "Liz" — and his ex-girlfriend Mary Austin "Steve." The one person who never got a female nickname was John Deacon. Freddie's reason? He was simply too masculine. The most John Deacon compliment ever given.
Freddie Mercury had a system.
Everyone in his inner circle got a female nickname.
Freddie called himself — Melina.
Brian May — Maggie.
Roger Taylor — Liz.
Elton John — Sharon.
Rod Stewart — Phyllis.
And his former girlfriend Mary Austin — became Steve. After Steve Austin. The Six Million Dollar Man.
His ex-girlfriend — given a man's name. Himself — given a woman's name. Rod Stewart — Phyllis. Elton John — Sharon. Nobody escaped.
His personal assistant Peter Freestone became Phoebe. His manager John Reid became Beryl. His cook Joe Fanelli became Liza. Even the man who would betray him — Paul Prenter — was given the name Trixie.
Every person Freddie Mercury loved. Every person he trusted. Every person in his orbit.
Named. Nicknamed. Filed away under his own private language.
Every single one.
Except one.
John Deacon — the quietest, most reserved, most private member of Queen — was the one person Freddie Mercury refused to nickname.
Freddie's reason was delivered with complete seriousness — John Deacon was simply too masculine.
The man who said nothing in interviews. Who stood at the back of the stage. Who retired without a word. Who has spoken publicly almost not at all since 1997.
That man — in Freddie Mercury's eyes — was the most masculine person in the room.
John Deacon has never commented on this.
Of course he hasn't.
