Arthritis is much more than “eat turmeric for joint pain.”
Turmeric and curcumin are often associated with anti-inflammatory benefits, but focusing on one ingredient oversimplifies arthritis nutrition. With over 100 types of arthritis, dietary needs depend on the condition, overall health and individual tolerance.
What should your diet focus on?
• Omega-3-rich foods: Fatty fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds and walnuts may help support joint health, with some evidence of benefits in rheumatoid arthritis.
• Fruits and vegetables: Provide fibre, vitamins, minerals and polyphenols that support overall health.
• Adequate protein: Helps maintain muscle mass, strength and mobility, all important for supporting joint function.
• Bone-supporting nutrients: Calcium, vitamin D, magnesium and phosphorus help maintain bone health.
• Vitamin C and iron: Vitamin C supports collagen synthesis, while iron contributes to collagen maturation. Include a variety of nutrient-rich foods to meet your needs.
• Limit ultra-processed foods: Reduce added sugars, sugary drinks, processed meats, excess sodium, trans fats and frequently fried foods.
And what about bananas, milk, coffee and gluten?
None needs to be automatically eliminated simply because you have arthritis. Gluten restriction is generally unnecessary unless there is coeliac disease, gluten sensitivity or another clinical reason. Milk and coffee are not inherently inflammatory for everyone, and bananas can easily fit into a balanced diet.
The bigger picture?
There is no single “arthritis diet.” A nutrient-dense, minimally processed eating pattern, combined with appropriate physical activity and medical care, can support overall health and physical function.
Nutrition should be individualised according to the type of arthritis, medications, nutritional deficiencies, other health conditions and food tolerance.
Don't focus on one miracle ingredient. Focus on the bigger dietary pattern.
