As we get deeper into the age of AI, the design process has started to feel muddy. We're fixing that. In Zoah, you build an identity first, and it becomes the foundation your product is built on. Here's a sneak peek. 👀

i haven't shared this before, but my childhood friends are founders of @RollingLoud and asked me to design a Rolling Loud Rolex. i did the watch face, the bezel and the box, then worked with the factory to get them made.

the pursuit of happiness is a lie. growing up in the US, it's drilled into you. you're a unique snowflake, so prioritize your happiness, protect it, chase it. i believed that for a long time. my decisions were driven by what would make me happy. then i pictured myself on my deathbed, looking back, and asked: if i spend my whole life chasing happiness for myself, will i be happy with how i spent it? the honest answer was no. now i think happiness is a byproduct. you don't get it by chasing it. you get it by doing the hard things that suck. duty, honor, responsibility. life is hard work. it's a struggle. but you enjoy it because you get through it. pursue the hard thing and happiness gets bestowed on you. it's something you earn, not something you chase. we've only got one shot on the leaderboard of life. i'm going to climb and climb and see how far i get.

AI keeps shrinking design down to a prompt box. We’re building the other way, with the canvas at the center of everything. A look behind the scenes with @brdrck & @notorioususb.

i get why ai feels threatening. your craft, your taste, your opinions, you've spent years developing them. of course it feels personal when it's happening to you. but take ourselves out of the equation for a second. for thousands of years we've been thinking about building a machine that could do our work for us. homer wrote about self-moving machines almost 3,000 years ago. aristotle imagined a loom that weaves on its own. this was always inevitable. it just happened to land on our generation. and what excites me is that we got to live before. the machines trained on our work. at some point most of what's online will be ai, but we were here when the web was still all human. we passed the torch. it's an honor. in my talk at @valiocon i drew the parallels to the last revolution i lived through, mobile. pull to refresh didn't come from apple, @lorenb made it while building tweetie 2. the hamburger menu didn't come from apple either. designers were exploring what you could do now that you just had your finger. the patterns for this era come from us too. it's a bigger playground. i don't get all the pessimism, i can't feel more excited.

The biggest culture shock I've experienced so far is that the Apple store in Japan doesn't lock any devices to the table

TDF wasn't even an idea before i went to @valiocon. @drewwilson kept saying i should do one of these in japan. then, a bunch of people there said "if you do it, i'll be there." so i figured maybe i could fill 50 seats, and i was naive enough to try. drew told me to keep it simple enough for one person to run as he's been handling it alone for 15 years. people love it, i love it, and it works. year 2 keeps all of what people loved from year 1, just with more breathing room between talks.

browser tabs. my arch nemesis. loving this totally new take on the browser by @jptksc 🔥 check out park
With Park there are no tabs or bookmarks... just a beautiful visual canvas you can use to see where you've been and keep what you want, organized however. Like I said, RiP Arc, hello Park. Joint the waitlist at parkweb.co

i have a funny story on this. i got flown out by @Google for an interview, this was very early in my career, i was 19 or 20. they found my work on @dribbble. i'd only been designing professionally for about a year and wasn't really in the tech scene yet. i was doing emails and ebay templates on the side. a google recruiter called me and said they were supposed to do several rounds of phone interviews first, but they liked my work so much they were just going to fly me out. i was like...really? they rented me a car, a hotel and i was on my way to mountain view. i'm sure once i got there, it was immediately clear to them they should've done those phone calls. they were asking me about product design. how would i solve this complex problem. how would i design this or that. my experience at that time was making ebay templates for a guy who flipped electronics. so i didn't get the job. about 15 years later google reached out again, in tokyo. this time i got the job, but i passed the offer. i didn't want to move back to sf. so yeah, never give up!
Back in 2021 I interviewed at Vercel and I failed badly. I couldn’t implement a debounce function and was stuck for like 30 minutes. It was pretty embarrassing. 10 months later (2022) I interviewed again and got the job. Don’t give up!
