Stalin's own voracious reading habits and intellectual inclinations have been noted by his biographers. He just wasn't an innovative theorist. Not every Bolshevik is going to be on the level of Lenin and Trotsky as theorists. I don't think people realize how exceptional they were. Stalin being a relatively unremarkable writer is entirely compatible with him being well-read and educated.
