Hewing to the bedrock law, policy, precedent and facts that define the Iraq issue is the closest we can reach the truth of the matter and the best way to cut through the conjecture, distorted context and misinformation that have obfuscated the Iraq issue. operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo…

Your argument is vague, so I listed the basic UNSCRs you need to repurpose for Iran. Per the MoU, "the next agreement" will go through UNSC, which has two relevant precedents: Obama JCPOA or Gulf War ceasefire. Your criteria depend on raising the latter. @ operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo…

I reiterate "The Iraq solution for Nahal Toosi's "The Iran War Is a Whole New Level of Quagmire for the US"" operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo… The bipartisan solidarity of the HW Bush, Clinton & Bush admins pursuant UNSCR 678 re Iraq is needed for Iran, which reqs curing the Iraq Syndrome.
NEW COLUMN: All Democrats want to do if they gain power in the midterms is pull the US out of the Iran war. Are they risking being on the wrong side of history? politico.com/news/magazine/2…

New at the OIF FAQ: The Iraq solution for Ray Takeyh and @ReuelMGerecht's "Why Trump is failing to make Iran flinch" operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo… At @washingtonpost, Takeyh & Gerecht warn the current strategy vs Iran is failing but do not provide the necessary solution. I do. Excerpt:

No "submarine w/...missiles" AFAIK, but @makesense12345's hypothetical reminds us RUS did in fact supply Saddam w/ 687-proscribed missile tech. To defend Iraq, RUS should have enforced Iraq's compliance w/ 687 instead of violating 687 w/ Saddam. Per ISG at web.archive.org/web/20120927…
Irrelavant what Russia does to Ukraine. We already established that this is illegal. What we haven't established yet is our part in it. Ukraine is used as a springboard to target civilian objects with our weapons and logistics. It is the same as if Russia lent a submarine with sea-to-land missiles, painted it in Iraqi colours, and let it fire at Edinburgh Castle.

Right—there was no "Treaty of Versailles" in Iraq's case. Rather, "in its resolution 687...the Council declared that a ceasefire would be based on acceptance by Iraq of the provisions of that resolution" (UNSCR1441), which the Saddam regime never fulfilled i/o/t end the Gulf War.

Technically there was 1 "Iraq War" which resumed with OIF's "any Member State taking action to uphold any Council resolution...to secure full compliance" (UNSCR 1441) press.un.org//en/2010/sc1011… re Iraq's Gulf War ceasefire "breach" (1441) at its "final opportunity to comply" (1441).
None of that applies to a defence of a sovereign state against aggression outside the UNSCR, which the second Iraq War clearly was.

It appears @mscott7612 is deliberately sabotaging his argument by upholding @makesense12345's premise that OIF equals RUS-vs-UKR as "unprovoked attacks & illegal wars of aggression" despite that OIF's case is distinct on law operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo… & fact operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo….
That makes zero sense. No one would be okay with a missile landing in Edinburgh - which is precisely why unprovoked attacks and illegal wars of aggression must be opposed everywhere, whether in Iraq or Ukraine.

To clarify: 1. Chilcot doesn't include a legal inquiry & distorts the Iraq issue. See operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo… 2. "Resolution 1441...omitted 'all necessary means'" is incorrect. 1441 enhanced 687, which recalls 678, and redundantly recalled 678. Excerpt via operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo…
The 'revival doctrine' (claiming 678 was self-enforcing) was rejected by mainstream international law and the UK’s own Chilcot Inquiry. Resolution 1441 intentionally omitted 'all necessary means' to prevent automatic force.

Re "arguing over 2003 Iraq doesn't legalize RUS annexing UKR", claiming OIF was illegal enables RUS by: -Upholding RUS's illegal opposition to the 678 enforcement; -Disabling the Gulf War ceasefire formula that distinguishes UKR from Saddam-class threat. @ operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo…
Either way, arguing over 2003 Iraq doesn't legalize Russia annexing Ukraine today.

FYI re "The 'revival doctrine'....was rejected by mainstream international law"—you can check the basic validity of any legal opinion re OIF by whether it accords w/ or contradicts OIF's law & fact sources, which are straightforward & plainly stated. Eg at operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo…

To clarify: 1. Annan's statement was a personal opinion, not an official UNSC 'confirmation'. 2. UNSCR 687 was explicitly enforced per 678. 1441 enhanced 687 & recalled 678. OIF followed precedent of multiple military actions that enforced 687 under 678 authority only since 1991.
UNSC Resolution 1441 warned of 'serious consequences' but did not authorize the use of force. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan explicitly confirmed the 2003 invasion was illegal under the UN Charter. Defending one illegal invasion doesn't make Russia's any more lawful.

The "Next JCPOA should be joint, comprehensive and have a plan of action"...In other words, repurpose the scope, authority, rules & standards of UNSCR 678 & the Gulf War ceasefire. That requires you to cure the Iraq Syndrome & apply the Saddam precedent. @ operationiraqifreedomfaq.blo…

Bad analogy. Per the Gulf War ceasefire, Iraq wasn't permitted to arm, be armed (eg, RUS sub w/ Iraqi flag) or oppose 678 enforcers. The only defense permitted to Iraq was proving its mandated compliance w/ the GW ceasefire terms. Those conditions don't apply to UKR & its allies.
