It was a fantastic experience today to join the line up speakers at the @WaterlooA study day with the @essexarchive , such a fascinating range of subjects from the economic state of Essex to the men who fought at Trafalgar and Waterloo.

Spent the day in Ravenna and I can’t say how moving it was to see the Byzantine and Gothic mosaics, seeing Justinian and Belisarius face to face really brought to life @peter_sarris amazing bio of Justinian

Yesterday the September publications from @Helionbooks’ From Reason to Revolution series landed. Some Spanish involvement in the American Tax Revolt and lots of Napoleonic recruitment from @GraemeCallister and @OWHDavis. It was a banger of a month! 🇬🇧 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 🇺🇸 📚

If you’re tempted by Gareth’s upcoming talk at the Essex Archives, I’ll also be speaking there about one of Essex’s child soldiers, William Mansfield, who enlisted at 16 and spent 31 years in the British Army, fighting Xhosa warriors, Marathas and even French privateers!
Two weeks to my talk at Chelmsford archives, with groundbreaking research on recruiting Essex men 1793-1815, based on no less than analysis of 868 service records. A few big surprises to come. essexrecordoffice.co.uk/what…

After two weeks, it’s great to be back home having joined an expedition to find Snow Leopards in the Burkhan and Archaly Valleys🇰🇬 It was an awe inspiring experience and we found evidence of Leopards and sadly poaching of their prey species including Ibex and Argali.

It was a pleasure to receive my copy of the @societyarmy journal including my letter to the editor recounting my Great-Great Grandad’s role as a stretcher bearer during the 1918 Spring Offensive, during which he was awarded the DCM for evacuating all of the brigade’s wounded
