DEMOLITION OF AIRTIGHT GUEST HOUSE, AWKA: OWNERSHIP OF PROPERTY IS A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT AND SHOULD BE RESPECTED BY ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT
The right to ownership of property is a constitutional right which can only be divested by the order of a court of law. No matter the alleged crimes or illegality associated with any property, the rightful course is to apprehend the culprit, arraign him in a court of law and possibly confiscate the associated property through an order of court.
It is terribly wrong, and a brazen display of high-handedness to demolish a citizen’s property, based on an alleged illegality, without first subjecting same to judicial process. It becomes more condemnable in this instance where a said raid was conducted on Saturday and the Hotel demolished on Sunday, within 24 hours and on weekend, without an opportunity of conducting proper investigation, adhering to fair hearing and resorting to judicial process.
This prevalent culture of demolishing houses and properties of alleged offenders is antithetical to rule of law and democratic ideals and should be stopped by the Anambra State Government.
I urge the State Governor, @CCSoludo to investigate and punish persons behind this nefarious action. The government should equally pay adequate compensation to the owner of the Hotel.
