Halloween and the other great events of 31st October – Ferdie Rous
Ferdie Rous reviews the often overlooked but equally important events that took place on the last day of October.
'Yes, it's Halloween. But plenty of other things happened on October 31st. Most crucially, 1,550 years ago, Romulus Augustulus became the last ever Western Roman Emperor.'

Money Matters: A lot of hot air miles – Neil Collins
'Air miles - and the rewards they bring to frequent flyers - don't go very far these days, says Neil Collins
'A plaintive message from British Airways arrives in my in-box: don’t let your Avios fly away.
'The email proposes a solution to keep them on the ground: collect more or spend them. Of course. If I do neither, the poor little things will simply fade away, all 4,280 of them. For non-Avios addicts, this sounds a lot, but only because they are such tiny things.
'Avios are the Green Shield Stamps of the skies. Accumulate enough of them and you can fly round the world first-class almost for free – just as those stamps could earn you a Ford Escort, provided you had filled 950 books of the fiddly little things.'

I came, I saw, I conkered – Ash Smyth
Conker season has arrived - and so has my childhood nostalgia
'Striding out through leafy Beckenham, I spied a single, shiny conker on the grass verge – and it put me in a good mood.
'Conkers are pretty much the only season-marker I have ever noticed. And they always come round earlier than I'm expecting, like the start of every new school year, amid a sentimental haze of being kitted out with rugby boots, a bad haircut, and blazers that my mother swore I'd soon 'grow into'.'

Treat old age like a job – Nanette Newman
Nanette Newman, 92, has all the right qualifications for employment as an oldie
'Being old is like a job.
'It’s a job you didn’t think about enough. It’s a job you don’t particularly want. Still, the alternative isn’t that desirable.
'And it’s a job some people do better than others. At 91 years old, I should feel lucky to be applying for the position.
'The qualifications for this job vary. They include dodgy hearing, unreliable eyesight, changing hair colour, a reluctance to gaze into a magnifying mirror and a tendency to forget things you ought to remember.
'There are more things on the job application list – but I’ve forgotten what they are.'

My dad’s ode to autumn - Martin Bell
War correspondent Martin Bell introduces one of the classic rural columns written by his father Adrian Bell for 30 years.
'My father, Adrian Bell (1901-80), was a bohemian and man about town in London in 1920.
'His first ambition was to become a poet in the style of Keats or Swinburne. In the 1930s, he actually had two slim volumes of poetry published, as a gesture of thanks from the publisher of his first and bestselling autobiographical novel, Corduroy (1930), which was about farming in Suffolk before it became mechanised and industrialised.
'... But he remained a poet at heart. His columns in the Eastern Daily Press (EDP), from 1950 to 1980, were not really journalism but prose poems about the natural life around him.'

Happy birthday, Roger Allam, 73!
Louise Flind spoke to Roger about the 'charming' Johnny Depp and 50p baths.
'In the mid-seventies I was with a fringe outfit called Monstrous Regiment, and those were the days of nylon sheets. In a place in Newcastle-under-Lyme, there were huge notices saying ‘Baths – 50p extra’ and the landlady had the bath plug. When I asked for a bath, she said, ‘You’ve only been here one day…’
