My 12-year-old son overheard me begging my former boss for my job back. That night, he did something that made me feel like the worst parent in the world. Six weeks earlier, I had been laid off from a job I'd held for nine years. The company called it restructuring. I called it the end of the life I'd spent years building. I had a mortgage, two children, car payments, and enough savings to cover about three months of expenses. My wife worked too, but her salary wasn't enough to cover everything. I told the children that work was going well. I still got up every morning, dressed for the office, and left the house. Some days, I sat in my car in a supermarket parking lot applying for jobs. Other days, I went to the public library because I couldn't bear the thought of my family finding out how frightened I was. I wasn't proud of it. I just didn't know how to tell them. Last Thursday, I called my former manager. I'd already applied for eleven jobs that week and received three rejection emails. I asked whether there was any possibility of returning, even temporarily. He sounded uncomfortable. He said the company had eliminated my position and couldn't justify bringing me back. I asked whether there was anything else I could do. He said he was sorry. I thanked him and ended the call. I thought I was alone in the car. I wasn't. My son had come outside looking for his football. He was standing by the passenger door when I started the call. He heard everything. That evening, he barely spoke during dinner. I assumed he was tired. After we put the children to bed, my wife came into the kitchen holding an envelope. Inside was $640 in cash. She told me our son had been saving money from birthdays, holidays, and small jobs he did for neighbors. He had written a note and left it on her pillow. It said: "Mum, can we give Dad my savings so he doesn't have to ask his boss again? Please don't tell him I heard." I sat at the kitchen table and cried. Not because of the money. Because my child had started worrying about whether his father could provide for the family. My wife hugged me and told me we would get through it. But the next morning, my son came downstairs before school and asked me a question I wasn't prepared for. "Dad, if you don't get another job, are we going to lose our house?" I looked at him. And for the first time, I realized that hiding the truth hadn't protected my children from my problems. It had only left them to imagine something worse.
