Amazing: journalist does journalism to discover something, and because everyone is so used to people living by press release, they literally can't believe the journalist found it out on their own. holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2026/…

Replying to @RileeDHarrison
I love law school vs real world. Law School: "English courts operate under a strict hierarchy and lower courts are bound by the decisions of higher courts." Deputy District Judge: "I think the Court of Appeal got that wrong."

What people think cross examination sounds like: P: you plunged the dagger into him, didn’t you? D: I did. I did. I confess. I killed him. What it actually sounds like: P: turn to page 208 in your bundle; the last WhatsApp message dated 12.05.2009 please. D: which page, sorry?

On 13 October 2023, the lawyers representing Alexei Navalny were detained simply for providing him with legal assistance. Vadim Kobzev and Alexei Liptser were subsequently charged with extremism and sentenced to lengthy prison terms for doing nothing more than their professional duty. They remain imprisoned in a Russian prison because they stood in the way of Vladimir Putin’s cruel efforts to persecute, isolate, and kill Alexei Navalny. The prosecution of Vadim Kobzev and Alexei Liptser has been widely condemned as patently illegal by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Commission of Jurists, the Human Rights Foundation, the United Nations, the European Union and PACE. Even the Federal Chamber of Advocates of Russia has stated that the case against these lawyers violates Russian law and contradicts the established practice of the country’s highest courts. As we pay tribute to the courage of Vadim Kobzev and Alexei Liptser today, it is worth recalling that the impact of lawyers’ actions in cases of politically motivated prosecution is never limited to protecting a single individual. Law is merely words on paper without those who are prepared to defend it in practice. Justice without people willing to fight for it remains an abstract concept. These fundamental pillars of freedom exist in society only because good people are prepared to stand up for them. Lawyers who are ready to support those resisting a repressive system inspire freedom fighters around the world. They offer at least a measure of protection and the hope that a voice can still be heard, even from behind prison walls.

The Telegraph reports that Sir Ranulph Fiennes has had visitors in his care home, and there is still talk of an application to the Court of Protection to question whether his wife is acting in his best interests under her lasting power of attorney for him telegraph.co.uk/gift/1808379…
The Lost Explorer - Sir Ranulph Fiennes and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 I have written about the use and abuse of lasting powers of attorney, deprivation of liberty safeguards, and the powers of the Court of Protection - link in reply

For reasons I can't remember, I picked up a second-hand copy of "Cases in Court" published in 1949 & it's a very good read. Seems that the demise of transparency in the justice system has been lamented for more than 70 years.... And yet here we are, some of us, still trying!
