Veteran TV producer Pumla Hopa dies aged 59
South African television is mourning veteran producer Pumla Hopa, who died on 28 October 2026 at the age of 59, leaving behind a legacy of work that helped shape some of the country’s most recognisable television productions.
Hopa was best known for her contribution to the long-running SABC3 soap opera Isidingo, where she began her journey as an assistant director on the show’s first episode in 1998 before rising to become its executive producer. She held the position by 2008, helping steer the programme through storylines that tackled racism, xenophobia, HIV/Aids and other social issues affecting South African society.
Beyond Isidingo, Hopa worked in television production for decades and was credited on projects including My Brother's Keeper, Bogaditsong: Sister Wives, and Stokvel.
She was also recognised as a mentor who contributed to the development of talent in the local television industry. Her work earned tributes from colleagues who described her as a formidable talent whose influence would continue to inspire future generations of television practitioners.
Her family announced her death was announced by her family on 28 October. However, the cause of her death has not been publicly disclosed.

I want to offer a rebuttal to this. There’s been a lot of new producers coming into play, especially with Multichoice. A lot of those haven’t come on screen but some have, through the mini series slate, realities and other projects that are in the works. The tide is moving.
Personally, I feel like not enough is being done to open up the industry to new production companies and give them a chance to produce something different and exciting.
We see the same production companies producing shows that look and feel the same, often competing in the same time slots.
Most production companies in South Africa rotate their actors across different shows, which is why people end up complaining about seeing the same actors all the time.
One production company producing three to five telenovelas at the same time is something I will never personally agree with. Yes, more jobs are created, but the quality is not always maintained across all these shows. It often feels like, out of the four or five shows a company produces, one becomes the favourite while the rest don’t receive the same level of attention.
I wish the door could be opened to more new production companies, with guidance and supervision from well-established companies, to give them an opportunity to grow in the industry while bringing us something different, fresh and exciting.
