1. Question every requirement and eliminate unnecessary or incorrect assumptions.
2. Delete everything you can. If you don’t end up adding at least 10% back, you probably haven’t removed enough.
3. Simplify and optimize what remains.
4. Accelerate the process to make it faster.
5. Automate only after everything else is refined.
The sequence matters. As Musk puts it, one of the biggest mistakes smart engineers make is optimizing something that shouldn’t exist in the first place.
Never optimize, speed up, or automate a process before questioning whether it needs to exist at all.

He moved to Hong Kong with $180,000 and a computer.
Years later, he had reportedly built a horse-racing operation worth nearly $900 million.
But here’s the question nobody seems to ask:
What if the biggest advantage in betting isn’t predicting winners, but knowing when the odds are wrong?
Benter approached horse racing as a probability problem.
He built models to estimate each horse’s true chance of winning, then compared those estimates with bookmakers’ odds.
When the numbers revealed an edge, he bet.
When they didn’t, he walked away.
The principle behind it is called Expected Value.
