Least known canine species on earth.
A ghost in the forest: Atelocynus microtus , the short eared dog.
A blur if you happen to witness them in the flesh. Only a privileged few can claim glimpses with certainty.

Beautiful blonde jaguarundi.
(Herpailurus yagouaroundi)
These sleek forest felines have small rounded head and ears, similar to a housecat, but twice the size.
Often we have brief glimpses of these cats running along the edge of a clearing, even crossing the gardens of the lodge.

Trail camera footage from 2018
I was leading a group of clients into the terra firme rainforest east of the Lower Napo and north of the Amazon river in Peru.
We were searching for a species of rare amphibian ,the atelopus harlequin toad.
After about an hour of hiking, I fell behind in the group to urinate.
Just before I caught up to the group, a fast rushing noise came from the right, a blur passed in front of my feet on the trail and evaporated in the forest to the left.
It passed so close, I felt the rush of wind in the stillness of the dense, humid jungle air.
That blur!
That fleeting glimpse I caught.
A long slender body, dull grey color, slightly bushy tail.
Through the process of elimination, I realized it was short eared dog.
The jaguarundi is much shorter. the tayra has a distinct gait and aren't colored gray.
What an experience, and because I was in the back of the group, everyone else just heard me exclaim without prompt, holy $#!#.
To them, it was just another fisherman's tale.

I've removed this shade lizard ( Alopoglossus sp.) from my house several times in the past few days.
It will be my new housemate if I find again inside.
That's ok, I need some macro images to send to the pro for ID @onlyFAUNA ๐

Looking closely at the mottled gray-and-white plumage, pink legs, and body shape, this is a juvenile Glaucous-winged Gull. Theyโre common around Kodiak, Alaska, and match the features better than a duck or owl. Great catch by the fox!
