Van Staden was Jacob Zuma's direct point of contact for Stratfor — the American private intelligence firm often called the "Shadow CIA." They were close enough that Zuma trusted him to handle sensitive intelligence links with the Americans. Yet in van Staden's own manuscript, sent directly to Stratfor in 2007, he names Zuma as a spy for apartheid's Military Intelligence. This wasn't some random document floating around. It was sent directly to Mark Schroeder at Stratfor — an American intelligence firm that distributes analysis to businesses and governments worldwide. Stratfor employees reportedly circulated it among themselves as "light conspiracy" reading. That phrasing is telling. It suggests that much of what van Staden documented wasn't considered outlandish conspiracy theory — it was, at minimum, plausible enough to be shared internally. ◻️ The Man Behind the Document Van Staden was no ordinary writer. He was a former member of "D Section" of the Internal Security Branch — apartheid's top-secret overseas intelligence unit. He was an acknowledged authority on electronic surveillance, had debugging equipment "normally only available to government intelligence agencies," and facilitated meetings between Zuma and influential American businessmen before Zuma's election. He knew where the bodies were buried. And he named names. ◻️ The Irony Zuma, who would later wave around lists of "apartheid spies" at the Zondo Commission, was himself on van Staden's list. The man who accused others of being apartheid spies was recorded by his own intelligence contact as being one. The man who posthumously awarded van Staden the Order of Mendi for Bravery in Bronze in 2011 was named in van Staden's own manuscript as a spy. ◻️ The Book High Treason was printed and placed on the shelves of Vaandel Uitgewers for a short while. Then SAPS visited the property. The books were removed. But the digital copy survived — preserved in the WikiLeaks Stratfor cache. And the list remains.
