Today (10/23) marks the 124th anniversary of the end of the Coal Strike of 1902. After years of unfair wages & dangerous working conditions, nearly 150,000 coal miners in Schuylkill, Carbon, Luzerne, Lackawanna & Northumberland counties went on strike. Mine owners who refused to hear the demands of strikers stationed guards at mine entrances and throughout towns. As colder months approached, fearing a national energy crisis, #POTUS Roosevelt intervened, marking the first time in American history that the federal government interceded in a labor dispute on behalf of the workers. With the establishment of the Anthracite Strike Commission, the mine workers went back to work on Oct. 23, 1902. After months of hearings, the Commission granted the workers wage increases, an eight-hour workday for some of the workers, and uniform standards for determining pay. #OnThisDay, #ArchivesMonth - pastatearchives.com
