Any D Gov had a weaker '26 than Whitmer? MI state party descended into chaos, she waited till 1 month out to endorse Stevens, who ended up losing. As Newsom, Shapiro, Moore strengthen Ds in their states & Beshear/JB do nationally. She could've just run for Senate, cleared field.

There’s some sub-races happening in Dem Party, and in one, it’s Talarico vs El-Sayed. One is trying to run a disciplined, laser-focused race on his state’s issues, the other can’t stop sitting for Fox interviews & other major national press. Both might win, or both lose.

Josh Shapiro already *sounds* like he’s running for president. In his stump speech down the home stretch, the reelection seeking governor has a frequent target: Donald Trump. washingtonsun.com/campaigns/…

This is some wicked smart @passantino on how culturally right leaning Pod Bros have abandoned Trump. Another anec-data thing about Tuesday’s elections. Only thing missing is how this hurts Vance, whose posture is all about Modern Bro Man, in ‘28. status.news/p/joe-rogan-trum…

As friends know, I don't do a lot of on camera interviews. Much prefer a good ad campaign. But, occasionally a podcast. Joined @DaviSusan at @the535news to talk pre-election. youtube.com/watch?v=zxBSQUXw…

and stay tuned for questions from me, @pkcapitol and others:
Should there be age limits for Congress? The Constitution sets a minimum age to serve in Congress but no maximum, and its oldest member, Sen. Chuck Grassley, is 93. Supporters say an age cutoff would keep Congress fit to serve and open the door to new members, while critics argue age alone can't tell you who is able to do the job. Arguing Yes: @KornbergMaya, Senior Research Fellow at @BrennanCenter and author of "Stuck: How Money, Media, and Violence Prevent Change in Congress" Arguing No: @sjayolshansky, Emeritus Professor of Public Health at @uicpublichealth @JohnDonvan moderates. Forget banning stock trades. The incoming new members have already banked that as done deal. They want more - lifetime ban of members going to K Street, stiffer criminal penalties for congressional corruption, even term limits. My @washingtonsun column: washingtonsun.com/congress/c…

… when you hear this crowd out on the trail, they don’t sound like Pelosi/Rahm disciples of 2006, who wanted to hurt K Street. Today’s majority makers - and DSA types - sound like Gingrich revolutionaries. They want to hurt Congress. washingtonsun.com/congress/c…

New: On the verge of a potentially staggering Senate flip, Kirsten Gillibrand is quietly having a political resurgence that could keep her in charge of the party's campaign arm through 2028, sources told @TheWashingtonSun. After facing the wrath of the left over contentious Senate primaries, Gillibrand and Democratic leaders have worked to boost progressive nominees in the sprint to the finish line. In Michigan, Schumer endorsed Haley Stevens, but Gillibrand and the DSCC stayed neutral. Gillibrand called Abdul El-Sayed the day after his primary victory, offering her + the DSCC's full support. She also urged Democratic colleagues to pump money into the race. The DSCC and Schumer-linked Senate Majority PAC have since spent heavily supporting El-Sayed. The DSCC has raised more than $200 million this cycle and borrowed $15 million earlier this month, just weeks before Election Day. Gillibrand's allies point to her fundraising as central to the party's unexpected path to a majority. They also say she's learned how to work alongside Chuck Schumer, who remains deeply involved in Senate campaigns, without competing with him for the spotlight. Schumer spox told me Gillibrand has been an "outstanding partner." One major donor told me that if Democrats win the Senate, the question isn't whether Gillibrand would be offered another term running the DSCC, but whether she'd accept it. A victory also likely strengthens Schumer's standing as Democratic leader. It's a remarkable turnaround from the aftermath of 2024, when few Democrats could articulate a path back to the Senate majority in a single cycle. And a potential political revival for Gillibrand, who has attracted plenty of critics over her role in Al Franken's resignation, her ties to the crypto industry and her leadership of the DSCC. Not everyone is impressed. Some Democrats still argue a Senate majority would come in spite of Gillibrand and Schumer, not because of them. More on the unlikely resurgence: washingtonsun.com/congress/k…

NEW - In Iowa, cancer upended the midterms. An Iowa GOP strategist called it a "liability" for the party that's held one-party control for a decade. In '26, $20M+ spent on ads mentioning cancer. In '22, it was less than $200K. washingtonsun.com/campaigns/…

This is a fantastic @ec_schneider story about a hyper local issue that could decide the Senate and House majorities, and it’s not war, gas prices or housing. Great reporting.

The final days of campaigning in Ohio have become consumed with two things: the ad and the ass. No one can stop talking about Ramaswamy's ad featuring Amy Acton's estranged mother. His support has cratered since it went public. Multiple internal polls showing a mid- to high single-digit deficit (was a margin of error race). Per the internals, Husted's support has been relatively unaffected, but there's a fear it could ultimately drag him down. Still margin of error there. They also can't stop talking about Husted's rear end. As Bernie Moreno put it: “I was meeting with the president on Saturday and literally my Uber driver asked me where I’m from. I said Ohio, and he said, ‘Oh, is that the senator that the president commented on his ass?' I was like, 'Oh my god.'" From NW Ohio: washingtonsun.com/campaigns/…
