I was pleased to join a distinguished group of economists in signing on to an amicus brief organized by @m_clem in Mullin v. Doe and Trump v. Miot, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) cases currently before the Supreme Court.
The brief provides an overview of the overwhelmingly negative economic consequences of terminating TPS for most or even all beneficiaries.
Signatories include @DAcemogluMIT, @leah_boustan, @AmuedoDorantes, @ChloeNEast, @raquel1fernan, @FurtadoDelia, @BrittaGlennon, @profzeke, @CJ_Heinrich, @baselinescene, @ethanglewis, @mayda_anna, @PMoserEcon, and @melaniemorten.

When I got tenure, I decided to use it start a new research agenda, studying US science in the 20th century, how it became dominant, what held it back, and what we can do better. Here's the first pub (with Scott Kim).
Analyzing scientists' biographies during the baby boom, we find that mothers have a unique life cycle pattern of productivity. Children reduce the productivity of mothers but not fathers, with important implications for promotions and participation. econometricsociety.org/publi…
Fulbright paid my way to the US as a university student. I would have not been able to come here without that support, and it changed my life.
NEW: The board of the Fulbright Program has just resigned after accusing Trump aides of political interference. They say a State Dept. office under Rubio and Darren Beattie has cancelled scholarships to nearly 200 US professors and researchers. Story: nytimes.com/2025/06/11/us/po…

Eastern & Southern Europeans had the same response to the 1920s quotas act. Intended to limit low-skilled immigration the quotas exempted university scientists and students. Still the US lost an estimated 122 ESE-born professors & 670 scientists who'd have come as students 2/n
The effects on US innovation were disastrous. After the quotas US scientists patented 30% less in the pre-quota fields of ESE-based scientists relative to other fields. 3/n More here, with @san_muly & Sahar Parsa dropbox.com/scl/fi/h80j9yxbs…

In a happy twist of fate, this means @conlon_chris and I will be colleagues exactly 10 years after our first PyBLP commit:

About 9 years ago my son was born. On our first day home and his third day of life he spiked a high fever and we rushed him back to the hospital. After days of waiting for tests (including a spinal tap) we learned that he had bacterial meningitis.
