The 2026 face-offs in Arunachal Pradesh, ongoing at multiple points since July and confirmed by the ITBP DG - expose the limits of a regime that has prioritised “peace and tranquillity” over resolution.
In this article for Politea Research Foundation, I write about how China continues to treat an unsettled line as operational flexibility for incremental pressure, while framing its actions as routine and consistent with existing agreements. High-level meetings, limited disengagement elsewhere, and trade/pilgrimage resumptions do not change this pattern. Ambiguity remains the tactic; settlement does not.
