Kevin Hart had a shot at Uber for $50,000 to $75,000. He passed because it sounded โ€œlike murderville.โ€ Uber went public at $82 billion. Mark Cuban passed too, and he knew the founder. In the video below, Hart and Cuban take turns telling how each of them missed Uber. Music executive Troy Carter pitched it to Hart. Thereโ€™s an app. You need a ride, and a stranger nearby comes and picks you up. โ€œSounds like murderville to me,โ€ Hart told him. โ€œI donโ€™t know that person. I ainโ€™t picking them up.โ€ Years earlier, Cuban had rescued Travis Kalanickโ€™s first company when it was running out of money. Then Kalanick came to him with something called UberCab, at a $10 million valuation. Cuban loved it. โ€œIโ€™ll do it at $5 million,โ€ he said. Kalanick found someone else and never came back. In fairness to both men: in 2010, getting into a strangerโ€™s car did sound insane. And Cubanโ€™s warning was right. He told Kalanick the taxi commissions would fight to put him out of business. They did, and Uber didnโ€™t post a full year of operating profit until 2023. Cuban was right about everything except the ending. He shrugs it off. โ€œIโ€™ve done okay.โ€ Hart canโ€™t. โ€œUntil this day, I think about it,โ€ he says. โ€œI kind of avoid seeing Troy Carter.โ€ On the Street, the deal that sounds stupid in the room is the only one nobody else is bidding on. Would you have put $75,000 into riding with strangers in 2010, or said what Kevin Hart said?

Martin Lawrence got $6 million for Bad Boys. Will Smith got $2 million. 25 years later, Will got $17 million for Bad Boys for Life. Martin got a reported $6 million. And here's the part most people don't know: Will only got the role because of Martin. The producers brought the movie to Martin first and told him to pick his co-star. The original Bad Boys were supposed to be Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey. Martin's sister Rae told him to look at "the Fresh Prince." Martin invited Will to his house for dinner. "After five minutes of talking to him, the rest is history, man." Then came Independence Day and Men in Black. By Bad Boys II (2003) they were both on $20 million. By the third movie, the man who picked Will was making about a third of what Will made. In 2020 The Breakfast Club asked Will straight out about the rumor that he made $10 million more than Martin. "Hell no." Then: "We've been talking for four minutes, you don't go to that sh*t four minutes into the damn interview." To be fair to Will, he became the biggest box-office draw on the planet after 1995, and studios pay for who sells tickets. Martin was paid more when he was the bigger star too. But Martin opened the door, and Will walked through it and got the bigger check. Is that just how Hollywood works, or should Will have taken less so they were paid the same?

I went to VIP for free. No bottles, no bill, nothing. I was just there. And honestly, I was loving it. Then the club told me someone had bought my table. As I was being walked out, I saw who it was. I've never been so embarrassed, happy, confused, and excited at the same time. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Full episode with Michael Che on my YouTube. Link in bio.

In 2007, everyone laughed at Beckham for burying his career to chase American parties for $6.5 million a year. They just missed one line in the contract that made him over $1.3 billion. โ€œWhen I signed my contract, my manager Simon Fuller actually got a clause in the contract that enabled me to have a franchise at the end of my playing career.โ€ Thatโ€™s Beckham himself, explaining it years later. The clause gave him the right to buy a future MLS expansion team for a fixed $25 million, whenever he decided to use it, more than double what Toronto had paid for its own franchise that same year but still a rounding error compared to what was coming. By the time Beckham pushed his Miami bid through in 2014 and 2015, MLS was charging new investor groups $150 million to join the league. Other owners openly complained that Beckhamโ€™s partners were getting a franchise at a sixth of the going rate, riding a clause signed nearly a decade earlier. Inter Miami kicked off in 2020 and struggled near the bottom of the table for years, even drawing a league-record fine for breaking roster rules. Then Lionel Messi signed in 2023, and the valuation curve went vertical. By 2026, Forbes had the club priced at $1.35 billion, the most valuable franchise in MLS history. A $25 million number frozen into a contract in 2007 was now worth over 50 times what everyone else in the league had to pay just to get in. Did Beckham out-negotiate an entire league before anyone understood what the clause was worth, or did MLS just finally pay him fairly for turning it into a billion-dollar business?

Hot take: If Elon Musk had stayed in South Africa, we might never have heard of SpaceX, Tesla or Neuralink. That tells you how much a countryโ€™s business environment matters for innovation and prosperity. Africa is the poorest region in the world because our business environments donโ€™t give entrepreneurs the freedom to innovate and create prosperity.
