BREAKING: The Future According to Sequoia
$10 Trillion Companies Are Coming..
Alfred Lin, Partner & new Co-Steward of Sequoia
(#1 investor on the Midas List)
“When I joined Sequoia the largest market cap company was probably $300B or $400B dollars. Today we have companies that are worth $4-5T.”
“If you give it another 5-10 years… those companies continue to compound, it’ll be worth $10 trillion or more.”
For more than 5 decades, @sequoia has backed many of the most consequential companies in technology, from Apple, Nvidia, Airbnb, DoorDash, Stripe, & more.
But as @Alfred_Lin explains in this conversation, Sequoia does not think about the 54-year-old firm the way many others do. Rather than optimizing around AUM, Sequoia focuses on DPI & being a net liquidity provider to LPs.
Since 2020, the firm has distributed more than $43 billion back to investors (as of Oct 27, 2025).
In this conversation, Alfred breaks down:
- Why AI is accelerating startup growth and product velocity
- Why “AI kills SaaS” is the wrong framework
- How moats change during paradigm shifts
- What Alfred is hearing in boardrooms right now
- Which companies are most vulnerable in the AI era
- Founder-market fit & the importance of “spikes”
- Why the next generation of companies could be much bigger than today’s giants
- How Sequoia identifies outlier founders across companies like Airbnb, DoorDash, Kalshi, Zipline, Clay, Commure, Nominal, Physical Intelligence, Crosby, OpenAI, and Citadel Securities.
Recorded live Feb 26th at the @upfrontvc Summit 2026

In venture, no one climbs alone.
Sponsorship isn't just a bonus, it’s a necessity. The kind that can open doors, shape your path, and speak for you when you’re not in the room.
In our conversation with @PaigeHBuckner, she shares why sponsorship is the power move, and how to find the right one.

Venture capital might be driven by numbers, but it also runs on stories.
In our latest episode with @PaigeHBuckner, we unpacked why narrative is everything; not just for startups pitching investors, but for VCs shaping how they're seen by LPs and the industry. Storytelling builds belief. It determines which founders get backed, which funds attract capital, and who’s perceived as a leader in the space.
The lore we build around venture; who wins, why they win, and what success looks like, doesn’t just reflect the industry. It defines it.

8/ All the videos in this thread were made with the new @grok Imagine by @xai. It’s surprisingly good at following prompts, even with minimal instruction. Still has a bit too much of that glossy “AI surrealism” (faces too perfect, colors too bright), so I used @midjourney and @Google's Nano Banana to make some cinematic starting frames. Overall: excellent speed, well-designed app, love the Fun/Spicy buttons.
Minor UX nitpicks:
• It starts generating a video the moment I add an image, before I’ve written a prompt.
• It's hard to navigate to my feed of generations.
• I wish I could keep all generations (even the misses) after hitting "Redo".

6/ Magic happens when a medium stops copying and starts dreaming.
Early film was a camera pointed at a theater stage, until camera movement and post-production editing unlocked new forms of storytelling. Filmmakers went on location, added jump cuts, and invented VFX that transported us to new worlds.
AI is still in its infancy. The next breakthroughs will come from blending real humans with AI-conjured worlds, inventing new laws of physics, and designing interaction patterns that mix voice, visuals, and code.
I don’t know the final form, but I can’t wait to see where the new generation of creators takes us.

5/ Interactive audio — The most human medium, still trapped in linear time.
Conversational audio: What if you could converse with a podcast, query the best moments of a book, or talk to your heroes? (this is why @delphi fascinates me)
Pseudonymous audio: What if camera-shy creators could share their thoughts and voices but stay anon through avatars? There are so many great anon Twitter accounts whose voices I’d love to hear aloud.
Voice-first design is the next paradigm shift: Screens won’t disappear because humans are visual creatures, but we’ll need new methods that blend voice and visuals. Most of today’s UIs are structured databases in disguise. LLMs unlock something new: unstructured, fluid, conversational, design.

4/ New gaming worlds — Games have always mixed code and art.
Mods: Modding has long been part of gaming culture. Counter-Strike and Dota began as mods. Roblox is a moddable universe. AI codegen and imagegen could let anyone remix or invent their own genres. Candy Crush with your friends’ faces as candies. A fighting game where you design every move. An MMO where you craft your own lore from scratch.
Living worlds: What’s the next Sims, but with characters who continuously interact and evolve even when you’re not watching? Why isn’t there an endless otome game, when Love & Deepspace is doing $500M+ revenue?
If an AI UGC gaming platform existed, we’d all be playing K-pop Demon Hunters x Mortal Kombat by now.

3/ Small-batch, artisanal software — What if you could make apps just for you, your friends, or your followers?
Software built for passion and personal utility, not scale.
Utilities: All the messy spreadsheets in our lives turned into simple, personalized workflows. An AI trip concierge, a food log, a journal of your obsessions.
Kids: Now that we can talk to software, kids can build it too. Bedtime story apps starring your kids. Tools to track chores and Minecraft scores.
Love: What if you could give software as a gift instead of buying flowers? When @timt proposed to me, he coded a Ready Player One themed scavenger-hunt mobile app. Nerds can be romantic too.
Small business: What if an SMB or creator could roll their own tools? A stock calculator for followers of a fintech influencer. A booking engine for a nail tech.
A world of software that’s personal, niche, expressive, and human.

2/ Interactive stories — Narratives you don’t just read or watch, but inhabit.
Choose your own adventure: Stories that unfold interactively, shaped by your choices, fandoms, and favorite tropes. @character_ai is an early glimpse of the power of interactive roleplaying.
Multimedia: Multimodal models will enable a new generation of storytellers to work across mediums, from text to manga to film. Scriptwriters can become showrunners. Fanfickers can become franchise creators.
Underserved genres: Romance, horror, fandom, and fantasy have huge demand but not enough supply. (Romance is #1 in Kindle, yet Booktok fails to deliver me enough good enemies-to-lovers content).
Excited to see where folks like @killahtcell take the category.

1/ Every art form begins as mimicry.
Film copied theatre. Photography copied painting. Both found their magic once they stopped imitating and started inventing.
AI isn’t there yet. We’re in the “slop” era. But when creativity meets code, new mediums will emerge, such as…🧵⬇️
