My manager once told me that my career would move faster if I learned how to make the right people happy.
At first, I thought he was talking about performance and teamwork.
I was wrong.
I had worked in the company for almost two years. My performance reviews were excellent, I rarely missed deadlines, and I had never received a formal warning.
Then our department got a new manager.
He started complimenting my appearance, sending me private messages after working hours and finding unnecessary reasons to call me into his office.
One Friday evening, he sent me a message:
“You’re a beautiful woman. I think we should spend some time together outside this office. I could make things much easier for you here.”
I replied:
“Thank you, sir, but I’d prefer that we keep our relationship professional.”
He responded with:
“You’re taking things too seriously. I’m only trying to be nice.”

Boss: “I’ve been wanting to ask you something personal, but I don’t know how you’ll react.”
Me: “You can ask, ma’am.”
She turned around.
Boss: “Are you happy in your marriage?”
I stared at her.
Me: “Yes, ma’am. My wife and I are doing well.”
She nodded slowly.
Boss: “That’s good. I was hoping you would say that.”
Me: “Why are you asking me these questions?”
She returned to her desk.
Boss: “Because I’ve noticed things about you that I probably shouldn’t have paid so much attention to.”
Me: “What kind of things?”
Boss: “The way you speak to people. How you handle pressure. How you remain calm when everyone else is losing their temper.”
I smiled awkwardly.
Me: “Thank you, ma’am. I appreciate that.”
She looked directly at me.
Boss: “And I’ve started looking forward to seeing you every morning.”
I stopped smiling.
Me: “Ma’am, I respect you, but I’m a married man.”
Boss: “I know. That’s why I’ve been keeping these thoughts to myself.”
Then she opened a drawer, removed a small envelope, and placed it on the desk.
Boss: “There’s something else you need to know before you leave tonight.”
