“Not everyone in Parliament supports Medicare. But I always will.”

The Australian of the Year Awards are an opportunity to celebrate extraordinary Australians who make profound impacts on our lives and our communities.
Today we celebrate Esther Oh, the 2027 Australian of the Year for Western Australia.
After her son sadly lost his vision, Esther Oh founded Agili8 to teleport the 'virtual’ eyes and hands of multi-disciplinary medical experts, using smart glasses and smartphones, to remote frontline areas.
Despite battling an aggressive cancer, Esther pioneered her telehealth solution with remote Aboriginal communities to deliver a culturally safe model of care.
Agili8’s breakthroughs transcend time, distance, costs, manpower, socio-cultural and language barriers to close the gap for Aboriginal and remote communities.
I also extend my congratulations to the other recipients announced tonight:
2027 Senior Australian of the Year for Western Australia – Tina Baldwin
2027 Young Australian of the Year for Western Australia – Pheobe Ho
2027 Local Hero for Western Australia – Adam Desmond
Australians can be truly inspired by this remarkable group of individuals.
I look forward to seeing all the recipients in Canberra next year for the Australian of the Year awards.
“Meaningful solutions start with a fundamental shift in power. Solutions made by youth for the issues youth face.”
This week in Parliament, I used my Constituency Statement to participate in the Raise Our Voice in Parliament Campaign. It was a pleasure to share the words of a 16-year-old from the Perth electorate, Alexandra, on the record in the Federation Chamber.
Alexandra’s words highlighted the impacts of the mental health crisis affecting Australia’s young people. She pushed for programs designed and driven by students, to “heal the heartbeat of this nation.”
What struck me was Alexandra’s determination to stand up for young people and give them a seat at the table. Thank you, Alexandra, and all involved with the Raise Our Voice Campaign.
NEWS: Our laws to hold digital platforms to account have passed the House.
This means more choice over your default feed. Better protection from harmful and illegal content. And stronger action against online abuse.
For kids, it builds on the social media minimum age law and requires services like online games and AI chatbots to protect them from harm.
This is about Big Tech taking more responsibility for the online environments they create.

“If you think of which Treasurers have delivered surpluses in the last 15 years – there are only two surpluses that have come, both delivered by Jim Chalmers.”

“Put simply, I am here to fight for the Australian people, not fight with them.
Like any workplace, everyone should go home safe every day.
Therefore, we must not leave communities behind and only focus on politicians.
I aspire for every Australian to be safe.
Safe at work. Safe in their homes. Safe in Northbridge. Safe at places of worship. And safe doing politics.
Attacks on our democracy attack us all.
I believe the best way to make our democracy safe is to make our community safe.
I refuse to accept that violent people get to coerce Australia’s democracy.
Coercion that makes people fearful to volunteer. To scare people from putting their hand up.
This week we draw a line, saying that the violence, the hateful notes delivered to our homes, intimidation of staff and volunteers, written abuse and worse must stop.
Because we must not allow this attack to define who we are as a nation.
And we can’t ignore that the overwhelming majority of our nation are kind, compassionate and caring.
I encourage Australians to shine a light of positivity. Celebrate the good in our democracy, including the ability to disagree well.
Of course tell your politicians when we get it wrong, but also tell us when we get it right.”
AM PATRICK GORMAN AND CAROL BERRY MP - TRANSCRIPT - DOORSTOP - MONDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2026
“I believe that her biggest contributions to this Parliament are not behind her, but ahead of her. And I encourage every Australian, if they can, if they have the capacity, to consider supporting the Save the Children Fund in her name.”

Celebrating the best of the Australian spirit and thanking the volunteers who care for one of Perth’s most special places.
Friends of Kings Park have given their time to protecting our native bushlands for 33 years.
Kings Park is part of what makes Perth so special and we are lucky to have people who are just as special to care for it.
Australians do not want to pay more GST.
We know that some of Angus Taylor’s team back this idea.
And future Liberal Leadership candidates back it too.
Doesn’t matter who suggests it, I oppose an increase in the GST.
Honoured to tell Telethon star Olivia that the Australian government will contribute $6 million towards Telethon 2026.
This is Australia, and Western Australia, at its best.
People giving, volunteering, and helping others.
Funds raised through the 2026 Telethon will support 147 beneficiaries, 199 programs and services, 297 grants, 38 research projects and more than 3,000 pieces of equipment.
Thank you to all involved. And thank you to my beautiful date for the Ball, Jess.

Larni comes from a long line of hairdressers, from her mum to her aunties. Inspiring her drive to take her passion to the world stage.
“Hairdressing is so much more than working in a salon. It is an industry full of opportunities."
Larni is absolutely right.

“Poor Angus Taylor already had to play second fiddle to Pauline Hanson on the weekend at CPAC, and now he's having to play second fiddle to Josh Frydenberg, who is out there doing one of the most audacious leadership bids from outside the Parliament…”
