Burning wood is devastating people's health, especially in cities 🔥 Despite that, sales of wood burning stoves are increasing 🚨 So how can councils and campaigners inform people about the connections between wood burning and air pollution? 🧵👇

Over three presidential campaigns, Trump won eight million fewer votes than his Democratic opponents. Add up the days when more Americans approved of him than disapproved of him since he descended the golden escalator, and you get about two weeks.

Despite persistent opposition from the very strange local car lobby it turns out that closing the central car park in Chiswick to cars every Sunday to host markets has been a major boost for the retail economy. Keep gnashing those teeth @JoannaBiddolph chiswickcalendar.co.uk/desti…

I fear next week's Twitter cabbie meltdown over Oxford Street's pedestrianisation will be apocalyptic. In 3 months' time, no one will care and will wonder why it wasn't done years ago Remember the outrage when they removed cars from Trafalgar Square? Aldwych? Now, no one cares

Go for a walk on almost any farm in Britain and ask yourself where a hedgehog might find food, water or shelter there. The rough edges, pockets of scrub, areas of unkempt long grass, piles of dead wood, marshy wet areas and ponds, all tidied away. There’s nowhere left for them.
Britain had about 30 million hedgehogs in the 1950s; we've got under 875,000 today. The population has dropped by about 97%. Shocking.

A reminder that welfare spending as a percentage of GDP is at 10.6 % currently and was at 13.5% when the Conservatives were in charge. 55% of claimants are pensioners, most of whom vote Conservative.
🚨 Britain's benefits bill is ballooning out of control. Every meeting of Labour MP’s is about “…who can we tax more to give more benefits to others” Labour are sacrificing our national security in order to maintain this completely unsustainable welfare system. We need to get Britain working again.

The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

Clean air shouldn’t be a privilege. In London, we’ve seen how bold action on air quality can make a huge difference. ⬇️ Harmful roadside pollution down by 27% ⬇️ 40% fall in estimated deaths linked to toxic air That’s real progress. But everyone, no matter their background or where they live, deserves cleaner air. theguardian.com/environment/…

The meat industry tries very hard to keep cameras out of factory farms and slaughterhouses -- and a new undercover video shows why. Some day, our descendants will wonder about our collective blind spot to animal cruelty. A gift link to my column: nytimes.com/2026/10/17/opini…

The UK worst country in Europe when it comes to paternity leave. Doesn’t just deny fathers the chance to bond with their babies and grow more confidence in caring for them, it leaves new mothers as always with more to do.

This country is so car dependent that we vote governments in or out based on the current price of gas.
Just a slight tick of a rebound for Republicans on the generic ballot and Trump approval. Gas prices are down 15c from the recent peak, though oil futures are up again, so we'll see if that holds.
