Ownership can indeed empower kids, but not all feel competent to fully control their own learning. Before we give learning autonomy based on choice, opportunity & problem is good to know:
1) which players can be left alone
2) which need close monitoring
3) which needs our support
Perhaps too often coaches ask kids to tackle rather than support learning environment of intelligent defending such as interceptions which allowed:
begin counter-attack
build up play
retain the ball
pass/run forward
use space
score
positional advantage
These quotes resonate with me when coaching young players!
“Children learn how to make good decisions by making decisions, not by following directions.” ~Alfie Kohn
Messi: "I think football has changed a lot. It's more difficult to see a player who is different, who is out of the ordinary... Because from a young age you are forced to play in a certain way. And that's the problem."
“Teach children what to think and you limit them to your ideas. Teach children how to think and their ideas are unlimited.” ~ Sandra Parks

Having observing countless youth football training sessions, here are some reflective conclusions:
1) Most focus on well-run sessions (similar to well -run classrooms in school settings)!
2) Most giving kids prescribed ideas what the 'success' looks like and as result limiting kids learning potential!
3) Focus on delivery the 'curriculum topic' which only rewards 'false' standards, context and performance for the moment!
4) Most 'creative' things kids try to do is limited, downgraded only because is not part of curriculum.
5) Most have very limited relevance to kids and no understanding why they have to learn something!
6) Most sessions focus on coaching the 'game format' rather than age appropriate individual learning needs!
7) Spent large amount of time on team tactics not individual tech-tac habits & competencies!
Observation is a vital coaching skill, often overlooked or even neglect.
Reason? Most coaches enjoy being in centre of the pitch, demonstrate their knowledge via endless coaching interventions.
So ,how observation can help coaches learn more about their players?
1) How they respond to your instructions?
2) How they interpreted information you are providing?
3) Do they change their learning behaviour?
4) What is their interaction with learning environment you set?
5) What is their response to mistakes & failures?
6) What is the learning gap to help players with?
7) What impact the challenges you set have on players and their learning?

When we are coaching young players is worth to consider:
1) Understanding is more important than repetition
2) Performances aren't as valuable as learning
3) Learn when to get out of the way of their learning process
4) Observe the players learning behaviour which determines how you can support them
5) Embrace their curiosity
6) Engagement drive positivity
7) Simplicity drives understanding
8) Play drives motivation
9) Critical thinking drives problem solving
10) Failure drives learning
