We are ALWAYS have conversations about the languages/tone readers use when engaging with writers. Why can't readers get the same curtesy?
MIND YOU, if we're on this fuckass app talking about it. We're engaging in fandom off bat so WHO are you yelling at?
Readers are ridiculous sometimes. Yes. We've been talking about that for months. My argument is that ridiculousness is on BOTH SIDES. Writers aren't above criticism. The way a number of you "encourage/ask for engagement," is rude, demeaning, demanding and unpleasant.
Locked fic argument makes hella sense actually. I hadn't considered that. I have an account so I just read whatever. Is there any indication on the downloaded fic that it was locked?? Because there'd be no way to know just off of my downloads if not.
This is valid. The issue comes in with the *way* a lot of writers go about this. At what point is no longer encouraging engagement and now demanding and being entitled towards it. Writers act like they're doing us a favour instead of it being community building. Like damn.
I read title.
I read tags.
I read summary.
I make a decision and open fic or continue to scroll.
I have never looked at that ever. ao3 is like a library to me. I have no concern with what others are reading/enjoying in there.

“Fan artists can make merch and take comms but fic writers can’t” WE LITERALLY CAN I know 30-50 people who take writing comms you can physically print and sell fics you just have to keep it on the dl so you don’t get sued to hell and back we’ve BEEN doing this
Wait. Are writers so hell bent on engagement on ao3 because it proves interest in the bid for a book deal? Is that what's happening??
This is a valid ass conversation we can have actually. How can writers translate their fics into a portfolio and something that exists outside of fanfic?

Found an interesting, if long winded substack that uses the Ao3 downtime happening at the same time of that HP fic being repurposed as a novel as a starting point to talk about the shift of fandom culture from gift economy to a transactional one

Writers are constantly saying they dont get enough engagement. It makes ppl who do engage (kudos, bookmarking, sharing) feel shitty. Ppl just wanted to dl fics for the outage. Everyone who was going to comment will go back and do that when its back up.

they're trying to have their cake and eat it. If you want your labour to be paid you need to start from scratch and write original fiction. Fanfic gives you a shortcut to recognition, as you immediately get attention from the audience of the original work without working for it.

maybe we should all get together and write down a full guide to explain fandom for all of the people who didn’t look at fanworks before 2015

I firmly believe that one should write for oneself but fandom is built in community and interaction. It's not to become some kind of fanfic influencer or gaining anything, but to build community and have feedback. Just like any other part of fanculture fanfics need it. In order
I have said all I want to say. Conclusion is:
1. Capitalism is making y'all dizzy.
2. That's not even your IP. So idk what you're on about.
3. Don't write then?
4. Girl whatever.
Going to use one of my favourite fics as an example but you will note where I have underlined in red, are hyperlinks back to the fic, the authors profile and the comment box.
This fic is now apart of a series but this is an old download, it would also feature a 4th link.

also, the remedy to this feeling of exploitation on the part of authors is to cultivate a fandom community environment where the primary medium of engagement w/ fanworks is not ao3 comments! friends/beta readers reacting, circulating drafts or excerpts on social media, etc

ofc i understand where you and other creators are coming from, because that's the logic of social media platforms that function on an attention/influence based economy. but if ao3 is an archive, as it says it is, then you have to respect those norms.
