Mental Health Can’t Wait. This World Mental Health Day, let’s talk about more than awareness. People across Peel need access to mental health supports before they reach a crisis. But Peel gets HALF as much provincial mental health funding per person as the Ontario average—contributing to fewer services and longer waits. Mental health support is a community service. With World Homeless Day coming up, we’re highlighting what’s happening right here in Peel. 🏠 Nearly 1 in 5 households need affordable housing. 📋 More than 32,000 households are on the social housing waitlist. 📈 Homelessness is up 223% since 2021. And the wait for affordable housing can stretch 13+ years. Peel has about 1/3 as many affordable housing units per resident as other major urban centres. Local municipalities and community organizations are working to respond, but they can’t do it alone. Provincial investment needs to catch up with the needs of our growing communities. Earlier this year, we released research showing that Peel is receiving significantly less provincial funding for community services than comparable communities across Ontario. Now York Region has done a similar analysis — and found a similar pattern.
