The 2026 midterms were about punishing Trump. They were not about how much U.S. voters like the Democrats or their policies. The party that is smarter about what to do with this conclusion will win the 2028 presidential election.

Mark Levin wants you to believe otherwise.
Uber ride to Pheonix Airport Me: “rough night for Republicans.” Driver: “I’m a Republican. But I just couldn’t vote Republican this time.” Me: “why’s that?” Driver: “the war in Iran. And I’m a combat vet myself. Voted Republican my entire life, but just couldn’t do it.” Black vet. Roughly 60 years old. This about sums it up. We need an America First foreign policy.

Food for thought.
Every GOP strategist, consultant, and candidate should be forced to participate in a role-playing exercise this morning. Your name is Bob. You’re a 49-year-old blue-collar worker in Ohio. You’ve always struggled to make ends meet. The good jobs were all shipped to China and the few remaining pay a pittance wage, undercut by endless illegal labor. You’re a 3x Trump voter because you believed he would finally make America great again. You put your son through Ohio State. He graduated cum laude in computer science. You couldn’t have been prouder. After months searching, he landed an entry-level job at Microsoft. Beneath his qualifications, but a good start for a smart kid. Then he got laid off. That same month, Microsoft applied for 150,000 more H-1B visas because it can’t find qualified Americans. Your son has spent six months back in his childhood bedroom, sending hundreds of applications without landing an interview. On TV, Trump boasts about the greatest economy in history and how many women and minorities are finding jobs. You decide a father-son steak night might cheer him up. Gas is $4.50 a gallon. Filling your truck costs over $100. At Kroger, ribeyes are $30/lb. You settle for hamburger, even though 70/30 ground beef still costs $10+. At checkout, a fat black woman is screaming at the cashier because her EBT will only cover most of the filet mignon and lobster in her cart. You think to yourself how the Iran war has made everything expensive, but at least we’re stopping their nuclear bomb. You weren’t even sure where Iran was before you googled it after we first bombed them in March. After dinner, you take your son to the county fair. Half the people aren’t speaking English. Virtually none of the crowd looks like you. You’re forced to leave early after a “teen takeover” turns violent. A foreign born judge pledges none of them will go to jail. Back home, you turn on the TV. Vivek Ramaswamy is lecturing the crowd about American mediocrity and why Ohio needs more foreign talent. Your son grows upset. You change the channel. Now a Republican surrogate, the daughter of a governor or wife of an elderly billionaire, explains that young White men are the REAL welfare queens. They’d rather play videogames in their parents’ basements than work. Your son says nothing. He just goes back to his childhood bedroom. You turn off the TV. Then your neighbor starts blasting reggaeton and cracking open Modelos. He brought his cousin’s family from Mexico to help with all the minority-business contracts his construction firm keeps winning. Tonight they’re celebrating his nephew’s birth, the family’s first birthright American citizen. You sit alone in your living room. You worked hard, paid taxes, obeyed the law, and raised your son to do everything right. You voted Republican again and again because you believed somebody in Washington would finally fight for you. Instead, your wages are stagnant. Groceries are unaffordable. Your community is unrecognizable. Your country is fighting another foreign war. And upstairs, the son you sacrificed everything for is lying awake in the bedroom he slept in at twelve, wondering what the heck he’s even supposed to do with his life now. Every time you turn on the TV, the Republicans you elected are either congratulating themselves or explaining why you and your son are the problem. For ten years, they told you America’s future depended on your vote. Now you aren’t even sure America has a future worth defending. The Republican Party needs to answer one simple question this morning: You’ve spent a decade demanding Bob’s loyalty. You’ve given him stagnant wages, unaffordable groceries, another foreign war, and a son who did everything right but can’t find work. And when they complain, you call them lazy, entitled, and racist. What possible reason have you given Bob and his son to vote Republican? Do you honestly think you deserve their vote?

The 2024 mandate from voters given to the GOP was squandered by the war with Iran. We delivered a GOP President, House, Senate, popular vote, electoral landslide -- we even had a moderately decent SCOTUS. Trump's EO's weren't codified. No SAVE America Act. And a war.

I was cool with the GOP getting smacked around a little for Iran, Epstein, making us Israel's bitch, backing down in Minneapolis, forcing Vivek down our throats, etc. But a 75 seat Democrat majority is actually bonkers. I dont know how the Republican Party ever really recovers from this. We tried to tell you neocon fools. "Panicans" were right.

Kristi Noem was fired from her job because … as it turns out … she wasn’t very good at doing it. People like this are the reason Republicans lost the plot and got shellacked last night.
Larry Kudlow is correct. We were too successful the first year of the Trump administration.

So anyway this is a good lesson for politicians everywhere, if you don't show up for your voters, they're not going to show up for you. If you don’t protect your voters, they’re not going to protect you. Gas is expensive, life is unaffordable, we’re being gaslit about the war in Iran and instead of listening to the same constituents that literally put their lives on the line to wear a MAGA hat in 2016 and fought for the last decade for America first policy, the admin is now telling those same Americans to pretend like we voted for another foreign war and $4 a gallon gas. It’s despicable and elitist and it’s why the GOP got completely obliterated tonight.

Correction: THREE Republican Assembly seats and one State Senate seat in Brooklyn. Republicans have effectively lost all gains made in the borough since 2022 (save for a city council seat that they will likely lose in 2029)
Two Republican Assembly seats and one Senate seat lost tonight in Brooklyn - all three comprising areas that previously swung toward the GOP mostly over the public safety issue. It makes you wonder what happened … and I have some ideas.

I’m going to bed. If any New York journalists want unabashed opinion about the midterms in the morning from a Republican operative discarded by his party following a political hit on me, you all have my number. I have NOTHING nice to say. 😎

You didn't fight ANY Democrat obstruction - especially with nominees. You didn't codify EOs. You didn't pass the SAVE America Act. You're an irrelevant failure.
Over the last two years, Senate Republicans have put up a strong record of accomplishment that’s created safer streets, more money in Americans’ pockets, and new opportunities for families and businesses to get ahead. After fighting Democrat obstruction at every turn, we prevented the largest tax hike in American history, secured our border in an unprecedented way, confirmed the president’s Cabinet at the fastest pace in two decades, and put strong conservative judges on benches across the country faster than we have since the Reagan administration. I’m proud of our team and everything we’ve done for the American people, and I’m looking forward to the important work we have in front of us over the next few months. As we head into 2027, Senate Republicans will not stand idly by as the far-left, socialist wing of the Democrat Party attempts to unwind everything we’ve done. Thankfully, we still have President Trump in the White House, and we’ll work with him to stop the worst impulses of Democrat extremism. We cannot let their fringe positions become the mainstream.

He’s missing the plot but that’s pretty on brand. Republicans didn’t lose because of some Muslim takeover or illegals slipping through the border. Republicans lost because they failed to do one of the most important things in politics: show empathy. When working families and young Americans are telling you that they cannot afford their gas, groceries, and rent, you don’t try to gaslight them into believing they’re delusional and then bankroll a foreign war. It’s that simple. We were given a mandate, we fucking blew it, and now we must deal with the consequences.
Here’s why we lost. Don’t give up.

This but emphasis on BUILDING COALITIONS. I understand that the political environment was different, but the GOP executed a remarkable ground game in 2024 that was ONLY possible because of the broad range of coalitions engaged. We have to remember that politics is 50+1 and a lot of the time that 1% comes from a coalition you’ve successfully engaged.
While tonight’s unfortunate Red Wedding is the result of a complex set of factors, some lessons should be abundantly clear: candidate quality matters and we need to look to the future. Anyone just blaming Trump doesn’t see what we see on the ground. I hope this serves as a wake-up call to local GOP organizations across the country. Tribalism, political infighting, and the failure to recruit and cultivate strong, dynamic, next-gen candidates are costing us. Meanwhile, Democrats are recruiting, consolidating, and organizing to win. We cannot continue rewarding bad candidates over electability, charisma, competence, and the ability to inspire voters. Winning elections requires more than just winning broken primaries. It requires fierce candidates who can build coalitions, articulate a compelling vision, and actually earn the trust of the broader electorate.

Matt Walsh is not the average American but he is trying to say something that deserves a larger discussion: Trump and many in the GOP just spent eight months telling Americans who can’t afford their gas, groceries, and rent (many who supported him in 2024) that they were delusional and tried to justify the very war that drove up those costs … a war that many Americans *perceive* as being fought on behalf of another country. When Republican voters opposed U.S. spending on the Ukraine war, the most vocal of us were labeled Russian sympathizers. Today, those of who oppose the U.S. funding Israel’s Iran war are labeled antisemites. Republicans in Washington (and Trump) cut off the Ukraine gravy train when it became politically unpopular to continue it … and Trump’s announcement early yesterday shows a similar pivot being made with regard to the Iran war. But the damage is done: Democrats now control the pursestrings, they will hold Trump “accountable,” and Iran will come out of this more emboldened than ever before … all because the GOP refused to listen to the voters who gave them a mandate in 2024.
.@MattWalshBlog: "I'd rather Iran have a nuke than my country be run by communists."

GOP throws young people, young candidates, and the issues we care about to the side. I’ve been beating that drum for years and was thrown to the side the second they found a convenient opportunity to do so. There are some tonight who lost that deserved to lose. There are also many that didn’t.
