Another day delivering at the British Racing School, this time focusing on addiction.
Always good to be back at the British Racing School for some psychology, some important conversations… and, of course, horses. 🐎

Sometimes the strongest thing a person can do is admit they’re struggling.
Talking doesn’t necessarily solve everything immediately, but it can create the opportunity for understanding, perspective and change.

A line from Illusions by Richard Bach that makes you think: We’re very good at collecting evidence for the things we already believe about ourselves.
“I’m not confident.”
“I’ve always been like this.”
What if the limitation is only a belief I’ve practised for a long time?
There’s an important difference between living from your own values and constantly adjusting yourself to meet the expectations of others.
Write down three words that describe how you choose to be today. Not what you want to achieve. How you want to show up.
Autumn has a way of showing us something we often resist.
That letting go is part of living.
The trees don’t fight to keep every leaf.
They release what has had its season.
Maybe there’s something in that for us.
What might you be ready to let go of this autumn?
Saw this and loved it.
We can’t control everything that happens around us, but we can still decide how we respond, what we give our attention to and the direction we want to move in. That, for me, is where a lot of personal freedom starts.

I’ve always loved sunrises. But this sunset was different.
It made me think about endings.
How not everything that finishes has to feel negative. Some things end because they’ve run their course, some because we’ve outgrown them, and some simply because life moves on.
One of the more interesting things about the brain is how quickly it tries to fill in the gaps. One of the simplest psychological skills we can develop is learning to notice the difference between:
What I know.
What I think.
What I am assuming.

A line from Illusions by Richard Bach that stayed with me. I’m not sure every difficult experience feels like a gift when you’re in it. But often, with time, problems force something from us, perspective, courage, change, acceptance, or a decision we might otherwise have avoided.
Try this:
Ask yourself:
What belief about myself made sense once, but no longer fits who I am today?
Then replace it with:
Who am I choosing to become now?
Growth isn’t always about adding something new. Sometimes it’s about letting go of an old version of yourself
One of my favourite moments in a workshop isn't actually when I'm speaking. It's when the room starts talking.
And suddenly we're not just discussing psychology or performance as an idea.
We're connecting it to real life.

Really enjoyed delivering an online Mental Health, Wellbeing & Performance workshop for the National Horse Racing College. And as you can see from the notes… we covered a fair bit!
Always enjoy sessions where people challenge ideas and learn from each other.

It’s always a privilege to hear how the work has impacted the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share their experience. It genuinely means a lot.

Culture isn't created by what we say we value. It's shaped by what consistently receives attention and recognition.
If you want different behaviour, sometimes the first place to look isn't at the people.
It's at the environment around them.

There's an interesting gap that appears in almost every area of performance.
We can know exactly what we should do and still struggle to do it.
That's why I place so much emphasis on practice.
Not simply learning a new idea, but creating opportunities to use it.
What happens immediately after a mistake tells me a great deal about a person's relationship with performance.
Sometimes the most important part of performance isn't what happens when things go right.
It's what we do next.

A really enjoyable session at the British Racing School, delivering a workshop for Assistant Jockeys around mental wellbeing and performance.
Great group, great conversations and always good to be back in Newmarket.

Two years ago I was asked to be player-manager for a charity football tournament. Unfortunately, I decided to injure my knee the week before.
So the player part disappeared and I was left with one job, the gaffer.
Needless to say… we won.
Not every week needs a new strategy.
Sometimes it needs a better standard.
Small improvements repeated consistently often outperform dramatic changes that don't last.
The challenge isn't usually knowing what to do.
It's continuing to do it once the initial motivation disappears.
