Beautiful autumnal day at our rearranged ringing demo @Ness_Gardens in conjunction with @MerseysideRG . Lots of smiling faces and highlight was undoubtedly the number of Greenfinches ringed. 16 in total out of a total of 70 ish birds processed.
There were even a few Knot roosting on Lion Rock in Niffy Bay @hilbrebirdobs y’day over the high tide. Unusual to see them at this spot but roosting sites at a premium due to tidal surge
Combination of a high tide and winds caused a tidal surge @hilbrebirdobs meaning waders struggled to find roosting spots. Many ended up in top of Hilbre & on Lion Rock in the shelter of Niffy Bay
A very blustery day @hilbrebirdobs today with winds gusting F8 at times. Highlight was this 1st calendar year Stonechat caught & ringed. Probably the same bird as seen by @Alanehitch y’day.
Velvet Bracket (?) fungi on a very blustery walk around the village this morning. Only bird of note was a Snipe sitting glumly in a field of winter wheat.
Well done @DEBALMER for refunding the skulking Rufous-tailed Robin at Flamborough this morning. Good views as it splashed around at the base of a sycamore. Unfortunately excitement got to much for @Paynebirder on way home
Just got home as it was getting g dark to hear a Little Owl in our garden! 1st time I’ve heard it for months. Can’t believe how happy it’s made me feel!
Those in the know will instinctively know my momentary panic when I caught something scuttling through grass in front of me on Fetlar, Shetland……..until I got a closer view…. #notalancie
Rainbow over Feal plantation #Fetlar. Better get out there again…..
Great to catch up with the Long-eared Owl on Fetlar this morning. Found by @Colonelbirder y’day afternoon and I had hoped the bad weather would keep it here until the morning. Beautiful bird
Possible abietinus Chiffchaff in Feal plantation, Fetlar today. To much yellow in supercillium for tristis but much browner than our regular colybita with brown cheeks. Fattening up on the plentiful insects between rain showers
Something sad and incongruous about seeing a Yellow-browed Warbler that should be wintering in S Asia on a metal cattle feeder at Everland, Fetlar, Shetland. One of 3 seen so far
Just had a Bar-tailed Godwit fly over garden calling heading g west towards Dee Estuary. Only my 2nd garden record #pwc2026
A sad reminder that a lot of migrating birds don’t survive. This Water Rail was seen at Chalet @FI_Obs and found dead a couple of days later.
