Florida Walks Into Jordan-Hare and Shows You Can’t Take Everything Away Florida just walked into Jordan-Hare Stadium and came out with a 44-39 SEC road win. But the biggest thing I took away from tonight isn’t just that Florida won. This offense is multidimensional. Pick your poison. Want to load the box and stop Jadan Baugh? Fine. Aaron Philo will throw it over your head to Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III. Want to back everybody off and take away the passing game? Then we’re going to run the Baugh. And Auburn found that out the hard way. Baugh carried the ball 26 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns, including a 53-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Florida didn’t just run the football because it couldn’t throw it. Florida ran it because Auburn couldn’t stop it. When Auburn adjusted, Florida had answers. Philo finished 15-of-22 for 204 yards and a touchdown. Vernell Brown III had 86 receiving yards. Dallas Wilson added 74 yards and a touchdown. Florida even reached into the bag and had Kahleil Jackson throw a 48-yard pass to Amir Jackson. That’s what makes this offense dangerous. There isn’t one guy you can erase and suddenly Florida doesn’t know what to do. Take away Baugh and you’ve got Philo throwing to playmakers all over the field. Take away the deep ball and Baugh is coming downhill. Sell out against both? Florida showed tonight that it isn’t afraid to get creative. And somehow Florida did all of this while committing 16 penalties for 138 yards. Sixteen. That’s the ugly part of this game, and it absolutely has to get cleaned up. Florida made life considerably harder on itself than it needed to be. The Gators gave Auburn opportunities, erased their own positive plays and helped keep a game alive that Florida had multiple chances to put away. But think about the other side of that. Florida still produced 499 yards of offense. Florida still possessed the football for more than 39 minutes. Florida still scored 44 points. And Florida still won an SEC road game at Jordan-Hare. That’s scary because this offense isn’t close to playing its cleanest football yet. Philo wasn’t perfect. He threw an interception early. The offense had drives disrupted by penalties. Florida let Auburn hang around late. But every time Auburn tried to change the game, Florida had another answer. That’s what I’ve wanted to see from this offense. We’re not asking one quarterback to carry everything. We’re not handing the football to one running back and praying he breaks one. We’re not relying on one receiver. We’re making the defense choose how it wants to lose. Stack the box? We’ll throw it. Drop everybody back? We’ll run the Baugh. Florida is 3-0. Jon Sumrall is 1-0 in the SEC. And after watching what this offense just did at Jordan-Hare, defensive coordinators now have a problem: What exactly are you supposed to take away?
