We need a broad accord among economists and journalists that if we want to understand what's going in Europe, the only measure of GDP worth looking is the one excluding Ireland. I am only half joking when I say it should become the Eurozone headline number.

Can we have more of those please? Great Substack by Dylan Rogers on ASML as a chokepoint. The second point seems underrated in geopolitical debates. We need to think a lot more about asymmetric costs. open.substack.com/pub/featur…

Does anyone have the source for this chart, the definition for the y-axis and the method used to calculate this number?
If confirmed, this is telling: Russian data centres get hit, and online activity around AfD suddenly plummets. 📉 So much talk about German patriotism… then the connection from Russia goes down. 🤔🇷🇺

A chart that says more than a thousand words The acceleration in China's export volume growth clearly followed the RMB's depreciation. Sometimes international economics is simple (even if the PBOC and a few others want to fuzz it up)

The "AI" component of the trade deficit is growing, and largely registers as an increase in imports from Mexico!* (* Taiwan too, but the Taiwanese and other contract manufacturers have moved to Mexico for final assembly in a big way)
This is wild. Perhaps even wilder, Foxconn's giant plant in El Salto, Jalisco, which assembles Nvidia's NVL72 server racks, now supplies nearly 1% of all US goods imports.

New version of "Nowcasting using regression on signatures", so time for a 🧵 Take messy, mixed-frequency, gappy economic data, treat it as a continuous path, compute its 'signature', do regression. That's it. But you may wonder: why did we use such heavy mathematical machinery?
