HRF welcomes the long overdue institutional roadmap outlined by US officials to restructure Venezuela’s regime-controlled judicial and electoral bodies, while stressing that the proposed reforms must translate into immediate, verifiable action to pave the way for free and fair elections.
We can debate all day if "mano dura" is good policy and the extent of it. But this discourse never acknowledges that Bukele has taken over the judiciary and dismantled checks and balances along the way. Why the US govt is working as a mouthpiece for such a regime is puzzling.
From @yangjianli001: "Free markets do not automatically produce free people. Markets generate prosperity, but businesses respond to incentives. When access to an authoritarian market depends on political obedience, commercial institutions can become instruments of censorship." 💯

On this #InternationalDayofPoliticalPrisoners, HRF remembers the estimated 1 million political prisoners around the world. This week, we have highlighted the cases of Dauletmurat Tazhimuratov, Mahrang Baloch, Victoire Ingabire, Umar Khalid, Ulviyya Ali, Vadim Kobzev, and Alexei Liptser, as they describe detention in their own words.
As you read their words, remember that every political prisoner around the world is experiencing a similar plight. We must not become comfortable with this injustice. Today, and every day, we demand freedom for all political prisoners and accountability for those who target them.

#FreedomStartsWithAName #PoliticalPrisonersDay
There are more than 1 million political prisoners around the world, behind bars for daring to speak, worship, assemble, and express themselves freely.
Today, @NEDemocracy honored leaders who have worked tirelessly to free them. Their efforts remind us that standing with those who choose freedom is a proud American tradition.

Elections in Venezula have been set, according to Delcy as reported by @Bloomberg.
July 24, 2027 as Senator @BernieMoreno said?
July 24 is Simón Bolivar’s birthday— he’s the LIBERTADOR of Venezuela, Colombia, Panamá, Ecuador (The Great Colombia), Peru, and Bolivia.
We must rescue Bolivar’s legacy as liberator that Chavez and Maduro, and their uninformed international supporters, to put it politely, (who have suffered not enough reputational consequences and should have known better then or during or now: see @MarkWeisbrot @evagolinger @NoamChomsky_es @SeanPenn @mrdannyglover; follow and watch @jimepstein @iamGermania’s @reason documentary and @ThorHalvorssen for more info about why and how they’re uninformed and if they’ve ever recanted—will they do so now and support free and fair elections?) USED for their own mistaken, incompetent, and criminal “liberation” processes that:
1) destroyed the erstwhile and arguably most prosperous Spanish-speaking Latin American country,
2) eliminated a functioning tottering democracy with legacies such as Betancourt who was the first president to break with both tyrants Trujillo (right) and Castro (left),
3) created the largest migration crisis in the world, worse than Syria at its height (see @danybahar),
4) imprisoned and tortured judges like @mariafiuni and destroyed the fragile independent judiciary, as well as destroying the independent media see @marcelgranier and RCTV,
5) created some of the worst inflationary forces in recorded history in part because they thought that people who said that printing money would create inflation were Yankee neoliberal imperialists and they needed to test it out themselves see @ricardo_hausman ,
6) eliminated property rights and free trade;
7) imprisoned and tortured the partners and prophets of tomorrow : @leopoldolopez @jesusarmasccs @Urruchurtu @Vic_navarroL @RDiamanti and persecuted @MariaCorinaYA and so many more;
8) gave people expired food and became obscenely and criminally corruptly wealthy in the process see @AlexNSaab and @robertodeniz amazing PBS’s documentary.
8) and kidnapped and held American citizens hostage for ransom as well and many other foreigners.
Venezuela will hold elections organized by an overhauled electoral regulator and witnessed by the international community, acting President Delcy Rodríguez said bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

I appreciate the positive attention from new corners of the political Twitterverse.
But if you’re a Democrat who opposes these actions by Republicans but supports any of them from your own party, you also missed the point of the article.

International soccer star @KMbappe should not apologize for calling Mao Zedong a dictator. Mao was a dictator, and by orders of magnitude, he did more harm to the Chinese people than a comment from a soccer player ever could. Mao was the leader of the CCP for decades and his dictatorship and disastrous policies killed tens of millions of Chinese people in the Cultural Revolution, the Great Famine, and other atrocities. Involved in the Party from its first national meeting in 1921, Mao is the principal historical figure for a Party that continues his practices of oppression and ideological purges. For decades, the CCP has denied the Chinese people basic human rights including freedom of expression and freedom of religion. These are rights enjoyed by Mbappe and millions of people around the world and Mbappe should exercise this opportunity to tell the horrific truth about Mao’s dictatorship.
The real disgrace in this news story is the companies rushing to apologize so they can continue to do business in China. The CCP is the largest oppressor of the Chinese people and their human rights, and those businesses that work with the CCP help normalize its crushing brutality. reuters.com/business/media-t…

Mbappé's apology sends the wrong signal. Calling Mao a dictator is a historical judgement, not an insult to the Chinese people. By conflating the two, he adopts the Party's framing. Apologising will only deepen self-censorship on anything touching 'official China'.

One thing that’s important to remember in this Mbappé controversy is that this is *not* just about “offense.” That sanitizes the truth. People are jailed for criticizing Mao.
Some issue groveling apologies for financial gain. Others suffer in prison.

La Liga will “implement a protocol for awareness and communication that promotes respect for different cultures and helps prevent similar situations.”
These absurd controversies don’t just end at groveling apologies. There are also questions about players’ free expression here.

Global south and global north is such a dumb construct. Is China global south? Australia? Mexico? Anyone who is not G7? No, it’s just an intentional, politicized formulation to isolate and divide, giving license to cast opprobrium at the so-called north, whoever that actually is.

An American tells a Chinese person that the United States is so free that he can stand in front of the White House and yell, “To hell with Donald Trump!”

As @WSJForero — an astute observer and reporter of Latin and South America —, points out, Cuba’s dictator @DiazCanelB is congratulating @LulaOficial on his reelection in Brazil.
The irony is extraordinary. Cuba has not held a free, competitive presidential election since 1948, as Juan says.
Díaz-Canel is celebrating the choice of Brazilians while denying Cubans that very same right.
What better moment for Lula to call on Cuba’s dictator to hold free and fair elections, allow genuine political opposition, and release political prisoners?
Of course, given Lula’s long history of warm embraces and friendly relationships with Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez, and Daniel Ortega, I wouldn’t hold my breath. The photographs speak for themselves.
But here’s a principle that should transcend ideology:
“Democracy cannot be a privilege we celebrate for ourselves and our friends while denying it to others.”
Or:
“Democracy cannot be a privilege we celebrate for others but not for ourselves.”
If democracy is worth celebrating in Brazil, it is worth defending it and demanding it (and wrenching it from the dictators’s grip) in Cuba.
Will you speak up, @LulaOficial? Will you call on @DiazCanelB to let the Cuban people freely choose their own leaders?

A father and daughter imprisoned for demanding freedom in Cuba.
Félix Navarro, 73, whom we honored with NED’s 2026 Democracy Award, has reportedly spent 66 days in isolation. His daughter Saylí remains imprisoned too.
Their courage deserves recognition, not prison. Both must be free.
