In 1934, Robert Pirosh quit his high-paying job as a copywriter and left NYC for Hollywood to pursue his dreams of becoming a screenwriter. When he arrived in Los Angeles, he proceeded to send the cover letter above to every director, producer and studio executive he could find in the phone book. He was able to secure a total of three interviews, which led to a job as a junior writer for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He worked on a number of films during the 1930s and when World War 2 broke out, he served as a Master Sergeant with the 320th Regiment, seeing action on the frontiers of France, Germany and Belgium. In 1949, exactly 15 years after he had quit his job in NYC to pursue his dreams, Pirosh won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film, Battleground (1949).

this isn't the point, but this is one of the worst things I've ever read about writing. what if writing advice was created by a tech bro with zero understanding of the written word

For my Calgary chums: Fort Calgary is running a little summer film fest of great movies shot in Alberta. fortcalgary.com/events/broke…

Now that the Actor’s Strike has halted so many Calgary productions, we should shift our focus to making hyperlocal reality TV shows i.e. Real Housewives of Aspen Ridge, Survivor: Marlborough Station, Hell’s Kitchen: Joey Tomatoes Barlow

Shirley Jackson's letter to a disappointed reader in 1953 is going to be my mood for the rest of 2023.

I'm not much for script contests in general... Scriptapalooza took the cake and shit the bed with it this time. If I didn't think they were a money-churn before (I did) I most certainly do now (continue to do so.) moviemaker.com/ai-screenplay…

One thing I really appreciate about Stephen King is that he knows to chill out, step back, and throw in a couple of chapters where we see what the dogs and cats are up to

Just one of those things that would be over the top as satire. Ironically, this is what toy and movie execs are like in kids movies. newyorker.com/magazine/2023/…
