EC Orders Criminal Cases Against 1,767 Senate Candidates
The Election Commission has ordered criminal proceedings against 1,767 Senate candidates accused of knowingly applying despite being ineligible or legally disqualified.
The EC approved cases against 1,605 candidates on May 19 and another 162 on June 4. The cases have been referred to its legal division and provincial offices for further action.
If convicted, the candidates face one to 10 years in prison, fines of 20,000–200,000 baht and a 20-year revocation of voting rights. Any elected candidates convicted may also be ordered to repay their Senate salaries and benefits.
The EC said the accused remain innocent unless proven guilty through investigations and court proceedings.

On Monday (24 August), a group of activists stood on the Pathumwan Skywalk for 1 hour and 12 minutes to mark the 3rd anniversary of the imprisonment of activist Sopon Surariddhidhamrong and to demand amnesty for all individuals prosecuted for political expression.
Sopon has been held in detention pending appeal since 24 August 2023 on 4 counts of royal defamation and is facing a total prison sentence of 10 years.
Activist Nutchanon Pairoj, who participated in the protest, noted that the amnesty bill for people charged for political expression came into effect on 23 August, but it excludes those charged with royal defamation. Over half of the political prisoners currently detained are held on a royal defamation charge or a charge of endangering the Queen under Section 110 of the Criminal Code. The protest, he said, is held to demand amnesty for all.
