Incisive letter regarding the ongoing KDHX fiasco in @stltoday this morning. When will the KDHX board open its eyes?

Trying some social media posts again to see whether we've gone away? Well we haven't. You are, obviously, replaceable and will be replaced until there is a management change and your wrongs have been righted.

In September 2023, as KDHX was completing its purge of dissenting volunteers (of which I was one), it was being audited by @CPBmedia and ultimately fined $2500 for non-compliance. A waste of donor money and another betrayal of the community.

"relentlessly attempting to defund and essentially destroy KDHX 🤣🤣🤣
Management is doing a fine job of that without help🤣🤣🤣🤣

Because nothing says community media like threatening your volunteers — you know the ones who make it all possible — with termination for breathing a word in public about an email. – at Clayton, MO

Can't wait til KDHX is able to rebuild, restore, and move on from Kelly's many messes.

A confident, functional organization doesn't rig board elections, amend by-laws to centralize control, and disallow constructive criticism. This is an organization whose current "leadership" recognizes the precariousness of its power.

@KDHX is currently doing a 4th pledge drive since this time last year while continuing to insult volunteers & listeners by systematicially destroying democratic processes at the station.
Kelly & Gary have alienated the community & are destroying the viability of the station.

Once again @kdhx refuses to respect its volunteers by denying them representation on the Board of Directors. The current ‘election’ process offers one candidate, selected by the Board. This is not an election. It’s a waste of time.

This week KDHX is holding an important election for its board of directors. It's going about as well as expected.

the so-called "small group" of KDHX leadership's critics seems to be growing larger and larger by the day.... riverfronttimes.com/music/10…

You continually push a false dichotomy, hiding behind this argument to cover failed leadership.
KDHX was already fairly diverse and inclusive. You could have made additional pushes to up these efforts WITHOUT dismantling and insulting your existing community. Not an either or.

Here's KDHX Executive Director Kelly Wells: "'How do we continue to use the airwaves to deflect'" — she then corrected herself — "to reflect, not to deflect, 'the community and the people that are in it.'"
Freudian slip much?

Thank you for the succinct and honest statement. All of this chaos and harm has been unnecessary. KDHX management literally silenced volunteers, then silenced the community, and has refused to change course -- despite overwhelming condemnation. This is a tragedy for STL.
Stories like this are one of the reasons one feels sad for community radio.
Wells and Ann Alquist took over as leadership at KDHX in 2015 after the ouster of Beverly Hacker. Alquist was gone shortly thereafter, and Wells has steered the org for nine years. As someone who's watched community media a LONG time, I can say with some awareness of the space that KDHX hasn't found itself in far better straits than similarly sized stations in such a period.
In virtually any other environment (public/community media or nonprofit especially), a board might have observed the bad look all this is for once-loved brand and local relationships and changed leadership course FAST. We've all heard instances of managers stepping down in the face of serious problems. The digging in to defend management, for years at this point, when the common denominator of all the conflicts is management is inexplicable and confusing.
Today, a station with interesting 990s is burning whatever financial resources it has left to fight lawsuits, take hits in the media it can't make a persuasive case to counter, and become an example of community radio chaos. But for what?
I grew up on community radio. As I told Current in 2017, it changed my life and made me who I am. To see such a colossal community radio fail is truly a heartbreaker.
[Sorry if this comes across as tough. I appreciate the difference these stations can make in listeners' lives, and this meltdown dragging on as it has is tragic.]

I was a Board member back when Kelly was staff & am a former major donor & I can tell you she treated me like crap in every single interaction both while I was on the Board & after.

@KDHX's begging for $ has gotten even worse. Too bad there isn't a solution to this problem, like, say, a change in management and bringing back any of the former DJs who are willing
