"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there."

Just before we move on from reparations, I think it’s worth reflecting on what the sorry saga suggests about Burnham’s foreign policy approach.
In Boris, Cameron and Blair we have had previous Prime Ministers supremely confident in their own charm and ability to carry British diplomacy through their personal touch. But in our present PM we appear to have someone who combines limitless self-confidence with a real lack of diplomatic nous.
We know Burnham is a people pleaser. That can be a flaw if it means you fail to confront difficult trade offs domestically. And it can be ruinous in a foreign policy context. He seemed to think that he could emote and genuflect in front of the assembled Commonwealth leaders, and, well, that would be the end of the matter. He seems to have imagined that foreign governments would be so moved by his moral sensitivity that they would forget all about asking for money.
A PM needs to be bullish about standing up for this country on the world stage. That will often involve playing hard ball and ultimately foreign governments respect that strength. Burnham I fear is going to instead prioritise winning brownie points among bleeding-heart North London liberals, and trying to play some sort of enlightened elder statesman on the international stage. Not encouraging

It has always been a choice, even if this Labour government have been so determined to portray it as a necessity. Binning the self-inflicted harm of the Chagos deal is the most obvious open goal in British politics. Let’s see if he does it

TODAY | Court 69, Royal Courts of Justice, 10.30am.
The Chagossians return to court — asking for permission to challenge a deal that would transfer their homeland to Mauritius without their meaningful consent.
Great British PAC has contributed over £50,000 to the legal fight. Today, we stand with them.
Britain already administers Diego Garcia. Britain already operates the base. So why surrender sovereignty over one of our most strategically vital territories — and pay £3.4 billion over 99 years for the right to stay?
And why is the future of the Chagossian people being settled without them? 3,389 took part in a worldwide survey. 99.2% backed self-determination and remaining British.
Their fight for justice continues. We stand with them.

We are done for.
Totally done for.
A top lawyer who backed Mauritius’ claim to the Chagos Islands has been selected to serve as the British judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Prof Dapo Akande will serve a NINE year term - after being elected by Kier Starmer and Lord Hermer.
I can’t find the words that describe the despair.
The whole of our political class has mutated into a Fabian, British betraying cabal.
No more words. I have none.

There is nothing modest about the impact on all those cleaners, caterers, admin staff, site teams, & teachers who lost their jobs due to Labour’s education tax.
There is nothing modest about the disruption & destruction that so many children have faced for no good reason.
The Government promised this tax would fund 6,500 extra teachers. Currently, there are 2,000< fewer teachers than there were in 2024.

The internet will always have a memory...
Rachel Reeves, LBC 6 February 2023
RACHEL REEVES: Well, I voted to remain in the European Union, I thought that was in our national interest. But almost seven years have passed now, we are outside the single market and the Customs Union, we have to forge a path outside. The last thing I want for our country is to restart the division that occurred during that referendum.
IAIN DALE: If you believe coming out of the single market was so awful, if you believe coming out of the Customs Union has had bad effects if you think the lack of freedom of movement has damaged our economy, why wouldn't you argue to go back into those or allow those?
RACHEL REEVES: Because those decisions have been made. And we are now outside, and I don't think it would be good for our economy and for business if we started a whole load of protracted negotiations over a period of time. What I'm putting on the table and what Keir is putting on the table are practical things that could be done now to make it easier for British businesses to trade across the European Union. The status quo is not working, we want to improve on it. But I don't want to go back to the terrible division that we had in our country over many years through these negotiations.
IAIN DALE: Isn't the simple truth it's political expediency? Because you know that you'll find it more difficult to win back those Red Wall seats if you don't have a sort of bit of a Eurosceptic line in your policy line-up.
RACHEL REEVES: No, it's a genuine belief and from talking to businesses, that what they want are some of the practical changes that we've started to put on the table to make our trading relationship easier. And the idea that another seven years of negotiations is going to serve our economy. Well, I just don't think it will. And it will open up the divisions, which I think did huge damage to us as a country and I don't want to reopen them.
