An article I wrote for the @guardian on the pressures of having to be overly positive - and some of the inherent dangers

Great to hear from @VW98765 on how we can count and address delays in care experienced by Palliative Care patients in Wales, using Welsh Clinical Portal dashboard info

Great day 1 at the All Wales Palliative Care Conference in Aberystwyth. Amazing work being shown from right across Wales. Well done to the organising committee from BCUHB Specialist Palliative Care. @PallCareCymru #palliativecare #allwales #networking #Aberystwythuniversity
Great hearing from @BakerIdris at the 23rd National Welsh Palliative Care Conference at Aberystwyth University. I hope to fail better in future, thanks to Samuel Beckett!

Even these psychiatrists, who think “medical assistance in dying can be dignified and profoundly meaningful for everyone involved,” are sounding the alarm:
“Canada’s system for assisted death is no longer an option of last resort.”
What Canada is doing is horrific.

Short of Pike being innocent, it would be impossible to deliberately achieve an outcome that is as discrediting for the death penalty as this.
Christa Pike was unconscious and on a ventilator as of last night after the failed execution attempt earlier this week, her attorneys say. apnews.com/article/tennessee…

This is grotesque. Having tried, twice, to kill her she’s now in critical care having ‘life-saving’ treatment. What an utterly inverted, sadistic business.
US death row inmate Christa Pike taken to hospital after surviving two lethal injections, says lawyer bbc.in/4dyzAkL

Coincidentally with the sad passing of Esther Rantzen who spent her last couple of years campaigning for assisted suicide, there's just been an interesting case of an assisted dying going wrong.
The state of Tennessee kills prisoners sentenced to death by means of an injection of pentobarbital, the same substance used by the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland (only not usually by injection) where Dame Esther had considered going after she was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your point of view, a prisoner sentenced to death, Christa Pike, survived a double injection of pentobarbital and is now in hospital being resuscitated. First, the state tries to kill you, then it saves your life; how confusing.
Before the botched execution overnight, she challenged her sentence on the basis that the judge hadn't taken her childhood sexual abuse into consideration, but in the event, the US Supreme Court allowed the execution to go ahead. So it did.

Strange day yesterday: leading advocate of assisted suicide dies peacefully surrounded by her family while in the US we find that lethal drugs are not necessarily effective and can lead to a painful non-death, possibly involving brain damage.
I wrote about the uncertainties surrounding assisted dying (and lethal injection) drugs that still exist to this day. Some research desperately needed that will test ethics committees to the limit.

One of the weirdest discoveries in the Assisted Dying debate was finding out that ‘lethal’ injections are not always lethal - and certainly aren’t the peaceful way out some assume.

Another botched lethal injection. Pentobarbital is the drug also used in Assisted Dying regimens: "..concerns raised by Ms Pike proved true: vein access, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available, under a protocol veiled in secrecy" bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq8r…

Warm weather in Wales around Michaelmas on September 29th is called 'Haf Bach Mihangel'. Mihangel is Welsh for Michael. 'Haf Bach Mihangel' literally means 'Michael's Little Summer'. It is feeling warmer, more humid and breezy today with a spell of heavy rain on the way tonight!

Campaigners for so-called "assisted dying" figured out that to change the law, they had to change the language.
Plain speech became "offensive."
But it might be the last defense against making the unthinkable ordinary.

I have been very surprised by many of the responses I have received and seen on this thread from the pro MAiD side. It has been rude, defensive, lacking curiosity, lacking evidence and insight, and, at times, almost Trumpian- where anything they disagree with is 'fake news'.

If, like me, you have concerns about some MP's spreading misleading statements about Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for no other reason than to further their political ambitions, then please email the parliamentary standards commissioner - standardscommissioner@parliament.uk
These individuals don't seem to understand that their conduct can lead to hate crime incidents against some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
Please share.
